For me to put DeBoer in my top five I would have to base it on his previous head coaching tenures while ignoring his current performance … and hoping beyond hope that he becomes Bama’s third GOAT. I so want that for him and for Bama Nation … a continuation of the standard of excellence Saban set. But that would require mental gymnastics bordering on the absurd. And if I was still a gambler, I wouldn’t bet any money on him becoming Bama’s third GOAT. The odds Bama finds and signs the next GOAT within a couple of weeks of Saban’s shock to the system … are literally astronomical. It would be like beating the odds of winning a huge mega millions jackpot then 17 years later picking the right numbers to win the power ball jackpot.

I am not ready to give up on CKD but I have said all along there is only one GOAT and acting like we were not going to miss a beat was simply unrealistic. That did not mean we had not hired the right guy and an exremely good coach but it was not going to happen in year one. It was going to take time. I was given a hard time by taking that position by several regulars on here but to me it is common sense.

It’s not only common sense, it’s also mathematical sense as well! If you look back at some of my comments following the hiring of DeBoer, you’ll find our opinions on this matter were aligned. Like you, I so hope DeBoer beats the lottery odds and becomes Bama’s third GOAT … but I wouldn’t bet a dime on it. Like you, that doesn’t mean I think he was a bad hire. I said at the time I thought he was at worst the second best hire they could have made.

I’ve said repeatedly over the years that the only reason Bama has always ended up hiring coaches who ended up winning NC’s is because the Bama fans demanded it. Otherwise, you have to believe that it’s just been luck Bama has won NC’s in nine of the past eleven decades (the 1920’s, 30’s, 40’s*, 60’s 70’s, 90’s, 2000’s, 2010’s and 2020’s). Personally I think I’d put the 40’s into the loss column but that’s just me. Anyway, Bama will end up with a NC winning coach again. I hope it’s their current coach but I know some coach down the line will continue the tradition. It’s much like the NY Yankees fans who like Bama fans, demand excellence and will not settle for coming close. If the Yankees don’t win the WS it’s not OK.

DeBoer knew what Bama fans were like when he accepted the job and since he’s being paid extremely well, I’m one old rabid fan who won’t be OK with piss poor showings like I’ve seen too many times this season. The truth is Bama could easily have five losses. And if one more person tries to compare DeBoers first season with Saban’s first season my head may explode. Shula left the cupboards almost bare while Saban left DeBoer cupboards full of four and five star elite athletes. Only UGA had more to start the season. Vandy’s two and three star players manhandled Bama’s four and five star players from the outset. And Oklahoma who is almost a bottom feeding SEC team this season made Bama look like a typical Vanderbilt team. Other than one half of the UGA game and the LSU game, this team hasn’t looked elite at all. What they did in those six quarters though showed the talent’s in place. If that’s true then they’re not being coached well and the game plans are hit or miss with no ability to adjust either in the fly or at the half. Anyone who truly believes it’s the Jimmy’s and Joe’s and not the X’s and O’s hasn’t watched a lot of football. Coaches matter and it’s never more evident than when you see what we were blessed to see with Saban at the helm.

What as been done in the past at Bama is having back to back national title-winning coaches. We had Wallace Wade followed by FrankThomas., Both won about 81% of the games they coached. We can hope that CKD gets this thing fixed next year and grabs a title or three.

I mostly agree with this but what you call Bama fans I would call Bama tradition. Fans are part of that but not the only thing.

The reality is good to great QB play is required to survive in the SEC. The OC and play calling has to help the QB out with regards to this.

Milroes best games have come when Sherrill has started with higher percentage short throws to the TE and RB's. Why the OC gets away from that strategy is puzzling expecially when the OL is struggling to protect. I am sure some of this has to do with film study and what they think the D is going to do and where they think the best matchups are. In this OU game it appeared they just said hey our strength is Milroes legs and that is who we are and no matter what we are going to win or lose using our strength. A team has to be balanced to win consistently in the SEC because the DC's are to good to be one dimensional.

So is the OC's hands tied with Milroe?

I think he can. We all know Bama has been successful across multiple decades and coaches and they did not just start winning when CNS walked through the door. In my lifetime CNS and Bear were 1A and 1B in what ever order you want to put it.

We will win again at a high level and I believe CKD can do so. At the same consistency? That I doubt.

They are not able to run the offense they want to run. If you'd consider that 'hands tied', then yes. But, IMO, they've also done a poor job in several games of adjusting to what this offense under Milroe can do well. Against UGA and LSU for instance, they hit the nail on the head. Some of that I'm positive is due to the extra time to prepare. Other games, Tennessee and OU for example, they went in with a poor plan and didn't adjust well when it was obvious that the poor plan wasn't going to work very well. That part, is on them. This staff is good enough, and has enough experience, that they should have been able to be more flexible and color outside their usual lines. They've had a difficult time doing that... and at times it seems they've either overthought it, or in some cases, underthought... which is hard to wrap my mind around.

A new staff in a new conference takes time also adjusting. Another dimension to why I expected year 1 to be a growing year. No way he went against the quality of coaches in his past that he is encountering now.
