šŸˆ What's next for Alabama after embarrassing Rose Bowl loss? Worst postseason effort warrants sweeping change

This quote is quite telling. I had heard the story about Courtney telling REC to temper expectation prior to this season and how they failed to get OLs they wanted and they weren't sure about TY simpson.
But Alabama nearly took a complacent approach to the portal last cycle. They added a few pieces, sure, but I heard from multiple personnel folks around college football who questioned Alabama not being more aggressive in adding impact players. As one Power Four personnel person told me, Alabama would end up being aggressive in the portal during Year 3 out of desperation when it should be proactively doing it in Year 2.

So was this by choice or because we do not have the NIL money? If by choice you can fix it but I would ask why did you make those choices to begin with? If NIL limits will have to cut some folks that are not geting the job done so they can spend the money on higher value players.

I still think the biggest issue is mindset and culture being set by the coaching staff. MTAQ is much different than thinking schemeing is how you are going to win. Having good players w/o the mindset can create some success but not the level required to sustain excellence.

On Courtney Morgan - does anyone know what the criteria for player evaluation he has been task to look for?

You're asking lot of questions that most average fans wouldn't know answer to.

Understood and CKD gets paid a lot of money to answer them. All we can do is look at the results and they are falling short.

The questions I am asking gets at the heart of what CKD deems important and they manifest themselves in the players and coaches he brings into the program. I have a theory of what the problem is and it is not simply recruiting rankings. Not all 4/5 stars are equal when it comes to mindset, character and fit. All pure speculation of course but like everone we are trying to answer the simple question of what is the problem and what is needed to fix it?

I prefer questions like why the hell @BamaFan334 and @TerryP like Hey Dudes shoes.

There are some things in life you don't skimp on. The mattress you sleep on. The food you eat. What you wear on your 'effin feet!!!

While I don't have a pair any longer and haven't for awhile, they were some of the most comfortable shoes out there when they came out. As I remember those years the boat shoes (IE: Docksider) were in their infancy.

Oh come on, you have to deliver the goods now.
Simple - culture, mindset and player evaluation. Evaluation of players has to focus on competitive character not just pure stats. Do you seek players with a high competitive character? Maybe NIL makes this harder but other program have found the recipe.

The mindset part is about the head coach spending more time on the mental aspect that addresses players nature that holds them accountable to a higher standard and demands excellence in everything they do. Being a foundational hard ass coach which is not CKDs core. Push kids beyond what they think they can do which is against a persons nature unless they are high character.

Of course all of this is speculation withoug any basis other than the results we are seeing on the field.

Yea I could just tell from the beginning after his hire, every time I'd listen to him talk, he just doesn't have a commanding presence, despite being formidable in stature. Hell how many people have we heard now, who have said Saban is naturally intimidating? And virtually everyone is bigger than Saban. I hate to say it, but I think CKD's impressive record of success has more to do with the smaller settings he's worked in than his ability to manage an organization or elicit maximum effort and consistency from players. Shortly after his first few games at Bama, someone posted how penalized his teams were at Washington, which should have been an indicator of what the pressure cooker of the SEC would do.

I would evaluate the entire football program, top to bottom. make a check list for the coaches and players, analyst and all involved with the teaching and coaching of players for last year and this year combined. If any coach does not grade out to what you believe is acceptable and good enough to develop the players at the position they are teaching, then let them go, regardless of friendship or any other ties you may have with that particular coach.

Next, grade each player for their practice habits, play on the field, attitude, are they complainers, are they good team mates, their work in the class room and or any other metrics I could come up with. If any player does not get a winning grade is let him go. The players with the best grades get more money than ones with lower grades. A system could be worked out where evaluation of players could take place during the year and if lower paid players are deemed to be improving would receive a few more bucks as incentive to work hard. Don't like the system implemented, Bye bye.

After the dust settles, tell everyone involved with the players as well as the players, EVERYONE will be held accountable for their teaching, coaching and player performance on the practice field and on game day.

I am old so what I think don't really matter but you can't have football without discipline. Your coach is your mentor not your buddy. If you can't coach a player hard, then chances are less for his discipline. If a player leaves due to tuff love, then you're better off and the sooner the better.

Cignetti is kissing their ass trying to appease his crew then again, his roster is in better alignment than ours. Perhaps Kalen is trying to address that as he moves forward. It would be great to upgrade the IQ of the team as well.

I mention in another thread that I had missed and that was both UA and AU had the same number of players voted as All-SEC this year. 4 players each on the 3 teams. NOT on each team but total of 4 on three offensive and defensive teams.

That is telling from years back. All that talent is total bullshit.

Bama is a finesse team now.
That’s what happens when you hire a coach from a finesse conference. I’m not a ā€œfireā€ CKD guy… but I’m no where near sold on his style of coaching… but given the current NiL era… I’m not sure the old style hard nose coaching would work.
After thinking about this and reading here, I'm afraid it's a culture thing. It's not going to go away. It's going to have to be forced out-much like Saban after Shula.

Not sure with NiL era and free transfers you will be able to ā€œforceā€ anything out.

Until they ā€œfixā€ the free unlimited transfers, this is what we are going to get in college football.

And as in what happened post season, I think we actually over achieved this year. I’m shocked we made the playoffs and am not shocked how we lost to Indiana. It is what it is…

Good stuff

I need to just move on from the sport. The fact Formby can draw 1.75 million is just something I can't get my arms around. When I see him play I go back to the 3rd team tackle playing against a team like Mercer and he still can't block them. Bama don't have that type of money to pay for shit players like him.

I really, really hope that the coaches go back to the drawing broad! Maybe some will go to a coaching clinic or two or three................?

DeBoer was in the Pac-12 barely long enough to unpack his bags and have a cup of coffee. He didn't cut his teeth there. His philosophies are not rooted there. He specifically took the Bama job because he wanted a bigger challenge and he embraced the opportunity to follow Saban (when many others would shy away from it). If folks want to bang on his "style" of coaching that's fine. But a lot of the criticism I see and hear out there is just fans making assumptions about the guy that quite frankly miss the mark.

Grubb is part of that Sioux Falls crew along with Kalen and Morrell. I would fire him before sunset today. He can take his playground 3rd and one plays and his F 4 receiver running 30-yard routes with him. JMO but he made a living off the 1st round QB at Washington bailing his ass out along with two really good receivers.

Bama is a finesse team now.
100% agree. Needs to happen for us to have a real chance.
