| FTBL Watch senior QB Jake Coker in Alabama's first practice

And they're off.

Alabama began Practice 1 of the preseason camp under a cloudy Tuscaloosa sky. Instead of doing two workouts on the first day as in the past, the full squad worked together mid-afternoon. Storms were brewing to the north with lighting strikes visible from the field.

As part of the acclimation period, players wore helmets and shorts Thursday.

Here are a few notes from the offensive side of the ball (with a separate post on the defense):

-- There was no starting quarterback. Who's in the lead? Can't read much out of that either. When they were doing drills, Jake Coker andDavid Cornwell were 1A and 1B, both throwing at the same time to opposite sides of the field.

-- Freshman running back Bo Scarbrough was practicing with a brace on his right knee. He was fourth in line after tearing his ACL in the spring. The other player to go down with that injury, WR Cam Sims, was not out there as expected. His rehab continues.

-- There were a few new running backs out there too. Freshman Damien Harris was third in line behind Derrick Henry and Kenyan Drake. The former 5-star is one to watch this August. Ronnie Clark was the fifth back in line behind Scarbrough.

-- With the receivers, freshman Calvin Ridley was working fourth in line on one side of the throwing drills. Chris Black and Robert Foster were in the first group withArDarius Stewart and Parker Barrineau second and Derek Kief and freshmanDaylon Charlot in the third group.

-- Oregon State transfer Richard Mullaney had a number change from No. 82 to No. 16. He was not in the first groups.

-- There appeared to be no changes with the first-team offensive line from spring. Cam Robinson (LT), Ross Pieschbacher (LG), Ryan Kelly (C), Bradley Bozeman(RG) and Dominick Jackson (RT) were the first group. Korren Kirven was the second-team left tackle.

-- Reserve center Joshua Casher was not spotted on the field.

-- Nick Saban will meet with reporters after practice.
