In the past 11 years, the team ranked second in the preseason poll went on to win the title. The No. 5 team won it twice. Florida State was a rare champion from outside the top 10 in last year's preseason poll, but will hope to be only the second No. 1 to win a title in the last 12 years.

In the last three Alabama championship seasons, it was just outside the top spot. The Tide was fifth in the 2009 preseason coaches poll, No. 2 in 2011 and 2012. Alabama topped the poll last August before finishing No. 8.

Top 5 Coaches poll

1. Florida State (56) 1,543

2. Alabama 1,455

3. Oklahoma (3) 1,382

4. Oregon (1) 1,314

5. Auburn 1,271
