What struck me were the comments at the end of this piece on UGA's Rivals.com site.

I'd frankly have waited a year to renew the contract, but for all his decisions that anger me, I'm still happy to know our program is guided by a good coach who actually realizes that football is just a game whereby UGA's academic and ethical reputations matter more, as do the lives of the players/students beyond what they contribute to W's and L's.

I'd like a back and forth with that John Leonard on there that obviously thinks Georgia is a supreme program of the land. What a total idiot. I understand loyalty, but he can be made a fool in a about two sentences with actual facts and results. I can't stand sheep and blind loyalists with anything.

Good coach? Granted.
Academic reputation? I believe Richt does care about the academic progress of his players.
Ethical reputation? Hrrmm. Here's where I've a bit of an issue.

While we don't hear stories and reports out of Athens like we do out of Oxford, let's not get caught up in this "ethical standard" that Richt is supposedly upholding. The guy plays as close to the line as he can. Now, not having Rodney Garner on his staff anymore is an improvement, don't get me wrong. However, whether it's cash being payed (Freeze for a moment, there's an insinuation here.) or it's public funds being used to sway players, I've a hard time distinguishing between the two IF I'm using some "ethical compass."

Ledbetter: His brother is getting a scholarship despite the point he hasn't donned cleats in going on three years. Godwin's sister is getting her free ride with a whopping 1.5 points per game average in high school. Mitchell: Told the staff he was coming to Tuscaloosa and then, out of the blue, his cousin gets a scholarship.

But hey, maybe I'm taking the word ethical literally.
