Overall, though the Tide did more than cover the Vegas spread, did they pass to "Eye Test" to you? Here's my thoughts, do you concur?

Defense and special teams dominated. Offense was not what we wanted to, then again, we're spoiled as hell. Offense was extremely flat and the O-Line is pretty much to blame. No other way to explain it, they played terrible. I wish we had a game next week to gel some things together, but it is what it is. I'm still excited about this team, they looked solid when things clicked. Altee Tenpenney looks like the next guy.

From all I'd read over the off season I thought the OL would be better than they showed and that AJ and the receivers would be more in sync. Pressure on AJ and dropped balls I did not expect.
But our defense was much better than I expected. They are gonna be a dominating unit before September is over. We'll play much better against a&m.

Keep in mind, VaTech's defense was supposed to be their best they've fielded under Bud Foster. That doesn't take away from the issues that most of us observed with Alabama.

Some folks suggested this was going to be a closer game than most expected.

I agree with you plano, Tech's defense was really good, and once they realized our O line was the weak link, they exploited it.

One of fellow writer buddies got a quote from Steen that said something like "This game was the right team to start our season out with. It showed us that we had a lot to work on and saw some things from their defense we hadn't seen since I've been here. They wouldn't let us take them on in the manner we were used to and came at us sideways all day and it took us some time to adjust. So it was good we saw that now to be ready for anyone else who mimicks that.".... Who knows, I hope they're as embarrassed as I was at their play... I sure have egg on my face after saying that this was an offense who looked capable of scoring on every possession with all these playmakers....

I imagine that Steen was referencing that the Va Tech front was slanting at almost every snap either toward the TE or away. When you are smaller up front, you can't take on guys head up or you'll get mashed! Va Tech would line up head up or shade to the line strength and then slant or shoot the gap plus send guys off the edge. Sending more guys than you have blockers is a problem too.
