šŸ’¬ Tiger vs Phil PPV - Phil wins 9 million dollar purse in extra holes

Might be able to sell that to PPV with them mic'd up. Throw in eight more willing souls for a $100M pot. See if any of the young guns have the brass, confidence, and pockets. You could sell the shit out of that and it would be better than boxing.

Great idea to bring golf fans back. Last year wasn't a very good year for golf viewership iirc.
Only because I knew where it was due to the US Open. FWIW, '18 was 3.2, 5.08M.

SIDE NOTE: Brooks Koepkaā€˜s win peaked with 9.1 million viewers from 6:15-6:30 PM ET, up 10% from last year’s peak (8.3M).

Clearly they need Tiger back...or someone(s) to take his place.

Crazy, at the time there was nothing that would stop Tiger from breaking Jack's major record. And suddenly the train derailed.

The new guys all seem to chummy with each other.

I don't think it's any different; just more publicity.

As I recall we first started hearing about Juniper Beach 15 years ago...give or take a couple of years. It's been a haven for a lot longer with a lot of the tour players living in the same neighborhoods. I'm thinking we first started hearing about their personal lives off the course when Tiger and O'Meara were playing quite a bit together. They weren't alone but the couple were getting a lot of publicity due to O'Mears winning more than one major in a season.

I want to say Payne Stewart lived real close to where those two live. And, if I'm not mistaken, Benny Hinn was also around the corner.

These hyped matches never pan out. Anybody remember Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King?
Can we compare the two? I'm looking at '73 and thinking less than 2/3rds of households had color TV's and the choices included the big three networks.

More options to not watch it today, but I'm referring more to the hype and the let down from the lack of competition. If either gets ahead by a few strokes, it's over.

I get what you're saying. In match play it would need to be a 5 and 4 kind of game. I don't see that happening simply because it's so rare. A three shot lead through 15 would still attract viewers as I see it--Tiger effect and three strokes can be dropped in a single hole.

There's also a good number of people who just don't like Phil. I'm not a fan of his personality but then again I'm not a fan of Tiger's. I am intrigued by the thought of some of the "smack talk" on the box. We've seen both lose it, mentally, on a golf course.

What else is going on in golf that is so exciting? If Tiger and Phil are playing any tournament, where will the cameras be anyway? On both our superheroes regardless of where they are located on the leaderboard. These are the 2 best golfers of their era and one is "the" all-time best. Puts me in mind a little of the skin's game they had a few years back. I'll probably watch.

I remember many years ago Jack Nicklaus was #1 and Johnny Miller was coming on strong. Many thought he should be ranked ahead of Jack. Someone got the idea of this match play to decide who would be #1 with a big purse (at the time). Jack declined, and Johnny Miller started trying to bate him in saying things like, "Maybe Jack isn't number one and is afraid to try to prove it." Nicklaus took the high road, again declining saying they'd settle the debate on the circuit in the normal framework of the PGA. Jack was praised for his class, and Johnny Miller was never a factor again on the tour. It seemed to break him.

All time best huh? There are plenty of guys that would have something to say about that. He's not even remotely close to a LeBron-Jordan type discussion. Bobby Jones will forever be the best. Nicklaus holds the most majors, Snead the most wins. Tiger will hold a place in some hearts for his dominant run, but older folks will not say he's better than Jack or Arnie, new folks weren't around to witness it, and the ones around for his run just don't see him in the same light anymore. He still pulls the crowds, but it's because they love a comback story and want to witness greatness, not because they think he's the greatest.

I'll agree with this on Tiger, but it's not the same case with Phil. For me, it's one of the reasons watching golf isn't as entertaining to watch on TV any longer. The attention is focused on Tiger when when he's not on the first page of the leaderboard.

It's a ratings ploy. I get that. I also suspect it turns off a lot that actually spend the money that draws the bigger named advertisers.

How did you conclude that? I'm guessing you've seen him play 0 rounds of golf, shirt and tie and all.

Tiger has been the most dominant golfer in its long history, pure and simple.

During the 2000’s, Tiger Woods was such a World-Beater that he could have single-handedly qualified for the Hindu caste system as an "untouchable" for 13 years of his life on tour. From the period of August 1999 to September 2004 (264 weeks) and again from the period of June 2005 to October 2010 (281 weeks), Woods was the undisputed World Number 1 in PGA Official World Golf Rankings. He has been ranked Numero Uno by the same ranking system for a record 683 weeks, an unmatched and unrivaled achievement. But only one of many. That my friend is perhaps domination that only a lifelong Crimson Tide fan could truly grasp.

No, on Tiger. He doesn't have the most wins or the most majors. He's close but we know when that counts.

When it comes to comparing Jones to Tiger, Woods has one more major. Bobby would have been tied with him, or vice-versa, if he hadn't called a penalty on himself when he saw his ball move during the US Open. Bobby retired at 28 and there's no telling how many majors he would have won.
To date, he's the only player to win the Grand Slam in a single season.

I'd agree with Tiger being the most popular but that has to be taken into context with the exposure today's game receives.

When it comes to the game of golf, and the sportsmanship that the game was built upon, no one touches Bobby. BTW, never made a dime playing...

Best ever? Jack still rules.

Jack was able to navigate a 24-year career. And Tiger isn't finished. Regardless, I would put those 13 years of being #1 against anything The Golden Bear got done it that length of time.

As far as Bobby Jones goes, I'm going to have to leave you and your measuring stick to the 1920s. Lawdy.
