Dickens started the day 46-of-46 for 325 yards and three touchdowns to set a new record for consecutive completions in a single game. Dickens also completed his final four passes against Campbell a week prior, giving the signal caller 50 consecutive completions, the most of any player in a single-season.

Despite Dickens' remarkable start, Western Carolina still trailed 21-20 by the time he threw his first incompletion on pass No. 47 with 10:32 to play in the fourth quarter. The Catamounts trialed after going 1-3 on fourth down at that point. On the play after Dickens' first incompletion, Western Carolina had a 32-yard field goal blocked, still trailing 21-20.
