Steve Spurrier Says SEC Fans “Rightfully” Upset With Ohio State’s Easy Schedule

South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier has made some enemies over the years, given his tendency to be overly honest with the media about how he feels. Monday, he may have added another team’s fan base to the list.

On today’s edition of The Paul Finebaum Show, Spurrier took a mini-shot at Ohio State, telling listeners that he thinks that SEC fans can “rightfully” be upset about the Buckeyes’ schedule. He also brought up Texas A&M’s schedule from a few years back.

Via Saturday Down South:

“Every now and then when I listen in to your show, I know the SEC fans are a little upset at Ohio State’s schedule and rightfully so to tell you the truth,” Spurrier said. “But that’s just the way it is and how it works out for all of us. I remember several years ago, Texas A&M had four gimme games outside the conference, then eight conference games.

“There’s four of us that have that in-state rivalry games from another conference. We’ve got a pretty tough schedule.”

You can listen to Spurrier’s interview here. The schedule talk begins around the 6-minute mark.

If you’re wondering, Ohio State’s schedule features eight Big Ten games (which aren’t negotiable) and contests against Virginia Tech, Hawaii, Northern Illinois and Western Michigan.

According to ESPN’s FPI, Ohio State has the 52nd-hardest schedule in the country. South Carolina? No. 2.

Spurrier has to troll somebody. I'm not going to criticize a team's schedule who we had the opportunity to beat and got the breaks beat off of us on the national stage. It just comes across as sour grapes.

We have the hardest schedule going into the season. Hopefully by season's end it will have stayed strong. But history has shown us that each year there are several teams that turn out to be a lot stronger than predicted and teams that turn out to be a lot weaker than predicted. I just hope the teams on our schedule who are strong pre season picks don't tank. As long as we keep winning we're okay. It's when we lose a game and then are jockeying with another team in a power 5 conference for the last playoff slot that schedule comes into play.

I dont need to watch the entire season to know this is a cupcake schedule. ^ Are yall suggesting that we cannot assume this is a weak schedule ? There is only one ranked team on this schedule, and that team gets raped every time they play a decent team outside this weak-ass conference. hahaha

I view it as this...Yes, we had our chance at beating them, but that's after a grueling 12 game run, an SEC Championship, which caused us to be a very beat up team. Our #1 running back was about 60% that game. Our #1 receiver was probably 80%, and our #1 left tackle was probably 65-70%. They steamroll Rutgers, Maryland, Indiana, Purdue, Penn State, a down Michigan team, Minnesota, Illinois, Northwestern, and whoever the hell else makes up their crappy conference with second and third stringers getting many reps and starters getting rest. Yes, they lost TWO quarterbacks, but we all know a game manager can get it done for you, and if you're close to 100% at the end of the season, that's a miracle. I'd laugh in Meyer's face and anyone in scarlet and grey if they attempted to say one thing about their strength of schedule, any year, not just this year. They have had the worst schedule of any Top 5 team the last number of years, I've calculated it. The beat out Florida State a few years ago even.

Tifwiw but the NCAA shows the Washington Huskies at number 1, Arkansas at number 2. We are number 4.

Of all of the formats used to determine SOS, the NCAA method is by far the worst. It is simply the previous season's winning percentage of the opponents. In 2015 for example, Bama gets essentially the same SOS credit for playing 6-6 MTSU as they do for playing 7-6 ut or 7-6 Arkansas. :eyeroll:
