Bama will need to win two of three against LSU for the outright title. If they win one of the three they'll share the title with the Tigers unless we see Ole Miss sweep UGA (in Athens) this weekend.

If play were to open today for the SEC tournament, the #1 seed will face the #8 seed, #2 vs #7, with an outside chance we see the Tide at #3 facing a team in the winners bracket from game one, day one

The Tide is sitting at #9 in the latest RPI behind Florida and LSU from the SEC. With the three game sweep of UF, along with wins over Arizona and Minnesota (2) Bama is 6-0 versus the RPI's top ten.

The Alabama softball team needs to win twice on the road against LSU this weekend to clinch its sixth regular-season Southeastern Conference championship.

The Crimson Tide could have clinched it this past weekend with a sweep of Kentucky. Instead, Kentucky took the series 2-1.

It was the second time this season Alabama has lost an SEC series. Alabama lost two games to South Carolina in Columbia, in early April.

Alabama (47-6, 15-6 SEC) would clinch a share of the SEC title with LSU (40-12, 14-7) with one win this weekend against the Tigers.

I would think LSU would win, if we only take one in the series. The two teams would finish with identical records but they would have won 2 of the 3, head to head, giving them a tie breaker. Maybe that would only count for tourney seeding though.

The softball regular season champ is based on winning percentage. One of the main considerations to consider are rained out games (like Ole Miss this season.)

I'm thinking you're right on tournament seeding (unless it goes to divisional records like some of the other SEC sports) but the regular season title would be a shared title in the books.

FWIW, I've looked around SECSports.com to see if they have it spelled out. I haven't been able to find how it works, officially. I know you'd have been right in the past but where my memory fails me is how the tournament has changed over the last few years. We've seen the teams increase with the SEC expansion and we've also moved from double elimination to single.

Softball Heads into Final Regular-Season Series with Top-Five National Ranking - University of Alabama Athletics

Story Links
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Heading into the final weekend of the regular season, Alabama softball is ranked No. 4 in the USA Today/NFCA top-25 and No. 5 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball rankings.

The Crimson Tide fell in two of its three games last weekend against Kentucky, but is still at the top of the SEC standings heading into the final weekend of league play. Alabama is the highest-ranked SEC team in both polls, joined in the top 10 by Florida (7/9) and LSU (9/7). In total, 10 SEC programs are represented in both top-25 polls with Mississippi State receiving votes in the USA Softball poll.

This weekend, Alabama heads to Baton Rouge, La., for a three-game series against LSU (40-12, 14-7 SEC) beginning Friday, May 3 at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN2.

Alabama Title Hopes Down To Wire

Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.

Alabama’s softball team doesn’t have a crown yet, but the Crimson Tide is leading the Southeastern Conference going into the final weekend. And there is reason to be uneasy.

Alabama with a 15-6 SEC record is one game in front of LSU at 14-7 and 1 ½ in front of Ole Miss at 13-7. All three have a chance to win the regular season championship.

Most eyes will be on Baton Rouge where Alabama takes on the Tigers in games Friday through Sunday. Meanwhile, Ole Miss will be playing three games at Georgia on the same days.

Alabama and LSU play at 6 p.m. CDT Friday with ESPN2 televising the game. Saturday’s contest will be at 5 p.m. CDT on SEC Network. The Sunday game is at 1 p.m., also on SEC Network.

Ole Miss has only one path to the regular season championship, which is sweeping Georgia and LSU winning two of three games from Alabama.

If Alabama wins two or three games from LSU, Bama is outright champion. If Alabama wins one (and Ole Miss loses at least one at Georgia), the Tide and Tigers would tie for No. 1. If LSU sweeps Alabama, the Tigers get the crown.

No wonder it seems to Alabama Coach Patrick Murphy that championship season has already begun. In fact, he said, it seemed like it last weekend when Bama suffered two home losses to Kentucky in games that drew an average of about 4,000 each day.

As for losing two of three to the Wildcats, Murphy said, “They played hard. I don’t think anyone gave up. (Kentucky) beat us fair and square. They got the key hit. We need to flush it, get rid of it, and get ready to play Friday night.”

Motivation has been visible to Alabama players since the beginning of the season. In the locker room is a giant poster with the number ‘8” on it. That was where SEC coaches picked Bama to finish in this year’s SEC race.

Murphy said senior leadership from the two captains, catcher Reagan Dykes and pitcher Courtney Gettings, have “been key to the season.”

Now comes the final weekend with the regular season title on the line. The next week begins the SEC Championship Tournament. The Crimson Tide, ranked fourth in the nation in one poll and fifth in another, is almost certain to host an NCAA Tournament Regional and is on the cusp – as is LSU (ranked seventh/ninth in the polls) – for being home for a Super Regional.

Murphy pointed out that LSU lost its top two pitchers from last season, but has compensated well with its offense.

No kidding.

The Tigers lead the league in batting average (.324), slugging percentage (.547), on-base percentage (.430), hits (.427), RBI (309), and total bases (721).

But Alabama isn’t far behind on offense. Bama’s batting average (294) is eighth, slugging percentage (.506) sixth, on-base percentage (.411) second, runs scored (344) first, hits (402) fourth, RBI (306) second, home runs (71) first, and total bases (692) fourth.

Murphy’s concern is when the Tide’s hits (and big hits) come. Even though Bama is second in RBI, he feels that in Alabama losses there have been too many runners left on base.

The Tide coach said there had some “passiveness” in its hitting with runners on base, letting too many good pitches go and then having to go after tougher chances.

On the other side, Murphy points out that Alabama’s pitching “has held up well.” Three new pitchers have had the bulk of the work and all have been very good.

Freshman Montana Fouts is tops in the SEC among starting pitchers with a 1.07 earned run average and 13-3 record, followed by Krystal Goodman second with a 1.20 ERA and 9-0 record, and Sarah Cornell eighth in the league at 1.99 and 19-1.

  • She finished the weekend at 101 stolen bases, just one shy of Jordan Praytor's (2005-08) sixth-place career mark
  • So far this season, Brown is 40-for-43 in stolen bases
SEC DOWN THE STRETCH

  • Heading into the final weekend of conference play, Alabama, LSU and Ole Miss are the only remaining teams that can win a regular-season SEC title
  • Two wins from Alabama would secure a title outright for the Crimson Tide, while an LSU sweep would give the Tigers an outright title
  • Two wins from LSU would give the Tigers and the Tide identical 16-8 conference records, recognizing them as co-champions for the regular season title as the SEC only implements tie-breakers to determine SEC Tournament seeding
  • If LSU wins two of the three games and Ole Miss sweeps Georgia, the Rebels would finish with a 16-7 conference record and win the SEC regular season title
TOW WALKING UP THE LEADERBOARDS

  • Sophomore Kaylee Tow is the NCAA leader with 57 walks, putting her within reach of the UA and SEC single-season records
  • Her 57 walks is currently tied for third all-time at Alabama, alongside Charlotte Morgan (2010) and Bailey Hemphill (2017)
  • She is four shy of tying Haylie McCleney (2015) for second with 61 and nine away from Cassie Reilly-Boccia's (2010) record of 66

BATON ROUGE, La. – Alabama shut out LSU, 7-0, in Friday's series opener at Tiger Park to give the Crimson Tide a share of its sixth SEC regular season title with a chance to win it outright this weekend.

Alabama (48-6, 16-6 SEC) took the lead over LSU (40-13, 14-8 SEC) in the top of the first on a solo home run from Bailey Hemphill and that was the only offense for either team until the top of the seventh, when the Crimson Tide broke the game open with six runs on five hits, bringing the score to 7-0 which proved final.

The win clinches a share of the Crimson Tide's sixth SEC regular season title, with another win this weekend giving Alabama the championship outright. If LSU wins twice, the teams would finish with identical 16-8 conference records and would be recognized as co-champions, with tie-breaker scenarios only coming into effect to determine seeding for the SEC Tournament.

Hemphill's home run was part of a 2-for-3 day with two RBIs. Sophomore Kaylee Tow also drove in a pair of runs on a seventh-inning double that sparked the big outburst. In the circle, freshman Montana Fouts (14-3) threw her 12th complete game and fifth shutout, fanning three over 7.0 innings with just four hits allowed.

Hemphill gave the Tide the first lead of the game in the top of the first, pulling a towering ball down the left-field line that bounced off the foul pole for a solo home run. LSU would load the bases in the bottom half of the inning with two out, but a 5-3 groundout got Alabama out of the jam and kept the Tigers out of the run column.

LSU got its first hit of the day to lead off the bottom of the third, with the speedy Aliyah Andrews beating out an infield single before advancing to second on a throwing error. Sophomore Maddie Morgan ranged into foul territory and caught a popup against he dugout fence for out number one, with a strikeout and another popup stranding Andrews in scoring position with the score still 1-0 Alabama.

Elyse Thornhill led off the LSU half of the fourth with a double and advanced to third on a groundout. Junior Claire Jenkins fielded a hard liner for out number two and tried to make the quick flip to third for a double play, but the runner made it back in time. A swinging strikeout ended the inning, stranding the potential tying run 60 feet away.

The Tigers couldn't capitalize on another leadoff double in the fifth, with a groundout and fly ball putting two outs on the board before the runner tried to advance to third on an errant throw but a quick scoop and throw from Hemphill caught her easily at third to send the teams to the sixth with Alabama up 6-0.

The Tide stranded a pair on base in the top of the sixth and the Tigers left one on in the bottom half as it remained a one-run game heading to the final inning of regulation. Morgan drew a leadoff walk in the top of the seventh and freshman Skylar Wallace followed with a hard-hit single as freshman pinch-runner Kloyee Anderson advanced to third on an error. Turning back to the top of the order, junior Elissa Brown reached on an infield single to load the bases with nobody out. Sophomore Kaylee Tow ripped a double into the right-field gap, scoring two before Hemphill added two more on a single as the lead swelled to 5-0.

Later with two runners in scoring position and two out, a passed ball allowed junior pinch-runner Taylor Clark to score and an RBI single from sophomore KB Sides made it 7-0 as Alabama batted around the order. With Morgan standing in the box for the second time in the inning, Kara Goff entered to pitch for the Tigers and two Tide runners would advance into scoring position before a fly ball ended the big inning with the Tide leading 7-0.

LSU hit a two-out double in the bottom of the seventh but that was it, as Fouts and the Tide defense closed the door to hold the 7-0 shutout.

Game two of the weekend series starts at 5 p.m. CT Saturday, May 4 live on the SEC Network.
