Saban was featured as part of the panel discussion on the ESPNU "College Football Blueprint for Change" special where they discussed alot of things today (pay for play, agents, playoffs, NCAA's problems, etc.). Lots of great discussion on there, it replays at 7 (central) if anybody hasnt seen it that wants to.

Talking about compensation....how to allow the players to make money, etc.

Saban >> There is nobody taking profits from what we make at Alabama or any of these schools here and putting it in. Its not a business, it's revenue producing....it's revenue producing that's all reinvested back in the University and the athletic department and the program. Nobody is really making money, I mean we get paid salaries. aiight, but but (laughter), do you?

Meyer >> I will say this.....I really disagree, but I'll tell you what, you are a hell of a lawyer (more laughter)

Needless to say CNS didn't get his point across, I think I know where he was going with it, just didn't do a very good job articulating it.

yea, im guessing u didnt watch the show. thats from the prom,o for some reason ESPN spliced it up for the commercials to make it seem like Urban said that directed at Saban but he didnt. he directed it at the ESPN Basketball guy. Saban's argument about "revenue producing" was extremely good actually.

I try to stay away from ESPN to be honest, the brief clip I saw, it seemed like Meyer was giving Saban grief, not Jay. I'll see if I can find it and watch it.

like i said, thats because ESPN spliced it up for some reason. you see it in context on the full show.

y do u stay away from ESPN tho? thats pretty much the only place to get decent sports news on TV?

When Saban said "I mean, we get salaries", Bilas chuckled and mumbled something under his breathe...as if to mock him. I didn't watch it that close, but I never felt like Urban and Saban had any sort of argument...only that Bilas was trying to mock Saban before he could really make his point.

I just think it was kinda a stupid show to be honest...they were speaking about stuff that is obvious. But hey, any time that Coach Saban gets to be on ESPN like that it promotes the football program...which is never a bad thing.

Bilas was def. being a smart ass there. Dont ask me why a College Basketball analyst was even on that panel. Lou Holtz musta called in sick...

But there was absolutely nothing stupid about that. It's "obvious" to hear current Head Coaches speaking on topics like Pay for Play, the Playoffs, etc.? yeah not so much... and starting these conversations can be what starts some change. dont believe me, cane in point: Terrell Pryor being suspended for the first 5 games of the season. do u think that happened because of the NFL talking with the NCAA? no, that came about because of the NFL and College Coaches meeting set up by Saban and Meyer... to have the NFL cooperate with the NCAA's rules.

I don't like how they do some things. I don't like some of their reporting. I think they cause alot of the spin that happens and like to play innocent when things blow up in their lap, they have alot of mouths that start trouble.

I'll give you a recent example. Take the whole Texas Tech thing, with a helicopter dad who works for espn and mike leach - they went over the line many many times, spinning this whole thing with one perspective - presto Leach was fired - hell it was happening in the middle of games where craig james was a commentator. Then take the whole Bruce Feldman firing after the book he co-wrote with Leach.

to me, espn is an evil empire. I do watch them, I just try to limit my time on that channel - which kinda sucks because they are the only major sports news joint.

We've circled around this conversation so I'll jump in here Matt.

There's a difference in reporting, and commentary. Too often, those are confused.

As example, it might tick you off to hear Michael Wilbon talking about Greg's Wonderlic sarcastically. But, that's commentary. He's got his right and I'd bet within a week he'd say something you would agree with.

Then, there's reporting. When ESPN sinks into something they normally do a pretty darn good job.

Bias? Sure. It's everywhere, natural, and quite frankly expected. Hearing Stuart Scott talk about his Tarheels may tire me but he's a sports fan. Hearing Rece show very little bias towards the Tide makes me proud. But, deep down, you know he's giving people hell especially in basketball season.

I'd agree with you in saying, if you did, you didn't like the commentary that ESPN puts out at times.

The overall product? Please. I love it.

so take this ESPN TV contract with Texas for the LHN...it's to their advantage to make Texas A&M look like the bad guys...another example of reporting/commentary/bias, whatever you want to dress it up as. my point, ESPN has put themselves in a precarious spot - they have blurred the lines of sports reporting and have crossed the line many times.

I do watch ESPN, I just don't watch them as often as I use to say 5-6 years ago. Some of their direction and stance on things have left me questioning where they draw the line ethically - in terms of reporting the news. ESPN would have put Craig James on the air regardless if he was employed by them at the time, because it was news. I just feel that they spun it a bit more than they should have - I think they allowed him to jaw more than he should have.

.

Did you see Jay's look with Saban looked him in the eye? Don't smart off at Saban, unless you want "the look"

The show was rather dumb, but several good points were made.

The reason for the college basketball guy is because the last I checked college basketball was a college sport.

Uhhh...it was on "changing" College football not college sports...

Bout the only thing id agree with u on is the Bruce Feldman stuff, that was completely uncalled for and just straight crappy.
