I'm not a fan of family injury updates.  Saban, and other coaches, use the secrecy of injury status as a strategy planning component.  If you know a player has an injury issue or will be out/limited due to the injury, wouldn't that help the opposing team?  Ex.: if a DL is hurt on his left side and has limited mobility to his left, wouldn't you plan to run plays to his left?  If the opposing team knows the backup kicker has a top range of 40 yards, the odds of kicking a 43-yard FG is low and the possibility of a fake goes up.
