I'm not a fan of family injury updates. Saban, and other coaches, use the secrecy of injury status as a strategy planning component. If you know a player has an injury issue or will be out/limited due to the injury, wouldn't that help the opposing team? Ex.: if a DL is hurt on his left side and has limited mobility to his left, wouldn't you plan to run plays to his left? If the opposing team knows the backup kicker has a top range of 40 yards, the odds of kicking a 43-yard FG is low and the possibility of a fake goes up.

I'm on the fence here when it comes to injury announcements. I remember a few years ago Saban floating the idea that the NCAA should consider having an injury report like the NFL. There's a part of me that likes that idea.

In this case, what I've noticed is what his mom posted here about the injury isn't any different than what Saban's said about Reichard. He mentioned a hip flexor, said he was questionable, and it was something they'd take their time with to make sure he was "right" before he's back in action. The only difference here is she mentioned the doctor by name and mentioned bleeding around tissue while confirming everything Saban has said.

And @OldPlayer ..... kinda agree.....dont think its really anybody’s business if a player has a limitation by injury.....
Privacy should kick in and it should be only those who need to know...that get to know....and not just sports wise reasons....

You say that, but have you not seen the speculation on this board alone when it comes to injuries? You get the news and now wish you didn't? We all knew the kicker was hurt, but I do not think any gameplannibg will go into effect for his injury. Not like he was Mr. Automatic.

I would agree, but I would also say the family has every right to talk to people and let the info out if they so desire. As for game planning, I doubt it makes any difference for most positions. Maybe the QB as to how to prepare, but all the other positions if a guy is limited as you're saying, then he most likely shouldn't be playing anyway. Either way, it won't take long to figure that out in game for the opposing team. I really don't think it changes much if anything.

Actually, it may give us an advantage... with our history of FG % made outside the 40 yard line of recent years, it kinda gives us an excuse to go for it on 4th down. I would imagine our 4th down conversion rate percentage would be pretty good with this offense...

Families aren't restricted from broadcasting injury news or details. Mom went into a little more detail of how it happened and what the result is, but did she need to? IMO, don't release any information that could help the other side.

They also had to give permission for Saban to release those details, did they not?

I do get where you're coming from. That's what's left me on the fence.

I believe a pertinent question to be asked is "do these injury reports benefit people who gamble?" And, "is that the reason we get them for the NFL?"

Speculation creates some advantages
Plus I doubt opposing coaches worry about forums

Money wasted there
You'd be wrong there, my friend.

The fervor a lot of message board posters have to be "the guy" has created a news source which beats your other news sources, hands down. When "breaking news" happens with a football team you're going to find it on forums before you see it on the main stream media. It's my opinion you're buying into a narrative pushed by the media that message forums are trash sites when it comes to news. But, the fact is, they represent their biggest threat. News breaks on forums more today than it ever has.

Just a for what it's worth here ...

Been in this "industry" since the mid 90's...before AOL was sending out their free disks. I know how the media grabs a lot of their stories. It's from message forums. The fact is fans know more about what's happening with their teams than the media guys covering said teams. And, I can support that statement because I work with those guys...have for more than two decades.

Now, if you want to talk about a staff following a recruiting site to evaluate who they offer? Now you've got a point.

The key word is "details." Saban didn't give any details, just that it was a hip flexor injury.

Those injury reports can be total bullshit though. Bill Bilicheck is notorious with his injury reports. I think it was an ongoing gag that Tom Brady was on there with "right shoulder injury" for like three straight years every single week, to the point it became controversial when Brady legit had a concussion but was listed as "right shoulder injury" on the report.
