ATLANTA, Ga. — Despite claims by rival recruiters, recruits don’t think Nick Saban is retiring any time soon. That was the message Sunday from top prospects at the Georgia tour stop for the Under Armour All-America Game camp series.

The Alabama Crimson Tide are coming off a national title and return a loaded team, but Saban will turn 67 this fall. I spoke with prospects about how teams try to recruit against the Tide by using Saban’s age, and how Alabama tries to combat it. Some of the prospects include uncommitted recruits like five-star center Clay Webb and four-star defensive end Justin Eboigbe, as well as Alabama commits like four-star linebacker King Mwikuta and four-star corner Christian Williams.

None wanted to name schools on the record, but multiple said the two schools most frequently making the claims are coached by former Saban assistants in the SEC. Interestingly, in-state rival Auburn was not mentioned as trying to use Saban’s age against him.

How effective is the tactic? It depends on who you ask.

The prospects didn’t acknowledge being phased by it.

“I’ve heard that from other coaches,” Webb, who is strongly considering Alabama and Georgia, said. “And some people at my school say, ‘Why are you going to Alabama when Saban’s about to leave?’

“I mean, if he did leave, I’m sure someone could follow in his footsteps. But as long as he wants to be there, I think he’ll be there.”

Mwikuta isn’t buying the notion of Saban retiring.

“I hear about it all the time,” Mwikuta said. “I just laugh at it. It’s BS. You don’t do that to another coach. I take offense to it. That’s going to be my head coach.”

But Mwikuta has made his own evaluation of Saban.

“Coach Saban wakes up at 5 o’clock. He’s the first person in there every day. He outworks everybody,” Mwikuta said. “He is still running around, playing basketball, out there running and doing drills with the DBs. Sum that up, and you tell me how long he’s going to be there.”

Eboigbe said that he hasn’t heard the negative recruiting about Saban’s age “at all.”

Alabama, though, does seem to be taking steps to combat the image

Alabama’s 2017 recruiting class might have been the best in history. Six true freshmen played a prominent role in the title game win over Georgia.

The Tide also lost more than half of their assistant coaches off that team. If Saban wanted to retire in a year or two, considering the talent level on the roster, it would have been easy for him to replace the five departed coaches with elite developers and eschew coaches with elite recruiting ability. Come 2021 or 2022, the talent level would have dropped, but if the goal was to coach just another year or two and maximize the current talent on the roster with another title or two, it would have made sense.

Instead, after finishing sixth to Georgia’s first in the 2018 recruiting cycle, Saban focused on hiring strong recruiters. Promotions like Tosh Lupoi to defensive coordinator and Mike Locksley to offensive coordinator are evidence of that, as are hires like Jeff Banks, Pete Golding, and Josh Gattis. That’s not to say they can’t coach and develop, but these are hires prospects immediately connect with.

“It was very clear that they went younger and went outside the box a little bit,” John Garcia Jr., who has covered Alabama and Southeast recruiting for Scout and now 247Sports, said. “They got guys with ties to the Southeast, but also ties to the Northeast, the West, Texas.”

Alabama’s coaches are also using social media en masse for the first time. Insiders think this is a reaction to Georgia’s social media presence.

Coach Kirby Smart has copied the Saban blueprint almost step-for-step, with the exception of social media. Georgia coaches routinely post videos of themselves cutting up, having fun, etc. Alabama isn’t looking to cede its image as the program most resembling the NFL, but it’s now trying to pitch itself as able to have fun as well.

“I think he’s pissed about the perception and narrative that he’s slowing down,” Garcia said. “And I think he’s pissed about finishing No. 6 in the rankings. He won’t say it that way, but every time someone says he can’t do something, there’s a renewed energy.”

Kids are taking notice of the new approach.

“With the social media angle, we’ve never seen that. We’re seeing tweets, graphics, videos,” Garcia said. “The whole ‘Bama Cuts’ thing, you have Julio talking about the Alabama standard. It’s all about recruiting. They’ve always been ahead of the game in every element, except for social media recruiting. And now they’ve jumped up towards the top.”

(Episode 3 of Bama Cuts is dedicated to how Alabama players actually have fun, how freshmen actually do get on the field, and how Saban’s age does not matter.)

“To think they’ll be lower than No. 1 or 2 in the final rankings is probably shortsighted,” Garcia said.

“They just won a national championship and are still grinding for the next one this year,” Eboigbe said.

Two SEC coaches are reportedly trying to use Nick Saban’s age and eventual retirement against him in recruiting

Nick Saban is the oldest coach in the SEC. Nick Saban is also the best coach in the SEC.

So it would only be natural, with the Alabama head coach entering the 2018 season at age 66, for others around the conference whose job it is to beat Saban to start to use his age against him when fighting for the best players.

According to a Monday story written by SB Nation’s Bud Elliott, that tactic is exactly what’s happening.

“None (recruits) wanted to name schools on the record, but multiple said the two schools most frequently making the claims are coached by former Saban assistants in the SEC. Interestingly, in-state rival Auburn was not mentioned as trying to use Saban’s age against him.”
During interviews in the lead up to the national title game in January, Saban joked with former assistant and current Georgia coach Kirby Smart that he had no plans to retire anytime soon, especially while he was still coaching at a high level, leading the Crimson Tide to championships, and feeling a passion for football.

Smart, along with Jeremy Pruitt at Tennessee, Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M, and Will Muschamp at South Carolina, are the current coaches within the conference who previously assisted Saban. So they would be the culprits of this strategy to take down the crimson recruiting giant.

If true, for the most part, that strategy doesn’t appear to be working.

“I hear about it all the time,” said King Mwikuta, an Alabama commit and 4-star linebacker prospect. “I just laugh at it. It’s BS. You don’t do that to another coach. I take offense to it. That’s going to be my head coach.”

One uncommitted recruit had an indifferent reaction.

“I’ve heard that from other coaches,” said Clay Webb, a 5-star center prospect considering both Alabama and Georgia. “And some people at my school say, ‘Why are you going to Alabama when Saban’s about to leave?’ I mean, if he did leave, I’m sure someone could follow in his footsteps. But as long as he wants to be there, I think he’ll be there.”

Elliott goes on to make the strong point that Saban’s offseason hires and promotions focused on youth and had significant recruiting connections, something that could be an indicator that Saban wants to be around for longer than just the careers of the players on his current roster.

Saban honestly is probably aware of and used to any and every tactic utilized to try to overtake his team in Tuscaloosa. And he still wins titles. So he gets the last laugh. And a ring.

I agree. My guess would be Smart and Fisher. Especially considering the recruiting base. We cherry-picked Georgia under Richt. Kirby is trying to put a fence around Atlanta. Same can be said for Texas. Since aTm came into the league we have focused more in the talent rich area around Dallas. (hence the kick-off games there)

This kid gets it.

This is an issue that we are going to have to start dealing with on a regular basis from here on out. Nobody wants CNS to retire but we have to face facts that one day, in the near future, he is going to hang up the whistle.

As long as Bama keeps winning it wont matter. Saban's age hasn't been an issue. I think Saban will not drag it out. As soon as he sees he isn't being effective or his heart isn't in it. He will make a quick change and not drag it out AKA... FSU with Bowden. Then Bama will already have tagged his replacement...whether it be Jimbo or Kirby or whoever Bama has already secretly had lined up for a few years and it will be a streamline transition. Saban is too much of a perfectionist to have it any other way.

I’ve heard that since taking the job at Georgia that Kirby has turned into a “slime ball” or ass hat or whatever adjective you’d like to use. Not sure if that’s true or not. @TerryP you’d know better than most.

I think Alabama fans are claiming that due to the recruiting battles that have occurred. He's still Kirby. When Saban steps down, however, it won't be Kirby who takes his place. Kirby is home at UGA.

I'm not quite sure what you're saying here, OP. "Claiming that due to ..." versus know he's pulled some BS when it came to kids calling Mo's mom when he was still at Bama, or the picture of the recruiting board he took and then used on the recruiting trail...just as a few examples?

He's been pushing the envelope since he left Tuscaloosa.

(While this is not against the NCAA's rules it is symptomatic of the general feelings in Athens. Within the last few days the UGA football account on Twitter wa suspended again. This past time longer than it had been on earlier occasions when they "broke Twitter rules." This last instance was DMCA related...to the tune of their 6th offense over a short period of time. Now, you may be thinking "that's no big deal, it's just music copyright issues." That's true...but if you're willing to break those repetitively, what else are you willing to just let slide. Symptomatic.)

And for what it's worth I considered his actions to be of a pissant/asshat before he left Tuscaloosa.

Key phrase: "...it's not against the rules." Kirby used what was available to him and it worked. It was claimed that he took a picture of the recruiting board. Does anyone know this for a fact? He was so involved in creating the board, he probably could have recreated by memory. You don't think any of his coaches brought knowledge of recruits to pursue? All of this is clutter. It takes up room in your head that could be focused on steps to move forward.

I just know that when Coach Bryant got near the end, other college coaches used that to their advantage in recruiting. When the legends (Osborn, Hayes, Paterno, Bowden, etc..) walk away from the game, any coach in his right mind is going to use that to help them. I feel when CNS decides to retire or in the next couple of years, a coach is going to tell the kid, "he will not be there for your 4 year." Just my opinion.

Despite the variation in physical appearances, Saban isn't far from Coach Bryant's age when he passed (69). You know that EVERY school will use this when recruiting against Alabama.

Yes. It's a known fact he did that. There's a lot that hasn't been put out there as well. When asked if he was a "slime ball" or an "ass hat" it read like you blew those descriptors off. They aren't.

His behavior now is a genuine reflection on how he was in his last few years in Tuscaloosa. We know there's been some staff dissent at times and it's been a common refrain to point to people like Lane. When, at times, it was as much Kirby stoaking the flames as anyone.
