Washington, Detroit, Minnesota, and Tampa Bay already fired their coaches. Dallas possibly comes too.
I haven't read anything except ESPN's bottom line during the Alamo Bowl. Vikes have already asked permission to interview Dan Quinn (Seahawks D-Coordinator), Adam Gase (Broncos O-Coordinator aka Peyton's bitch), and Jack Del Rio (Broncos D-Coordinator). Lovie Smith is considered the favorite for the Tampa job but they're also supposedly considering Gary Kubiack (Houston Texans HC). Supposedly Texans are "very close" to a deal with O'Brien.
Now as far as Texas goes the AD says he wants a coach by the 15th and "sources" have reported the finalists for the job have been narrowed down to Jimbo Fisher, James Franklin, Art Briles, and Charlie Strong.
Burton has an article out right now breaking it down a little more...I can't recall where I saw it, but if I come across it again I'll copy the pertinent parts here...give me a few hours.
Texas athletic director Steve Patterson continues to lead the search for a new football coach.
In fact, later today Patterson will meet with key members of the T Association to discuss the possibilities.
Former Texas coach and letterman David McWilliams will be among those who Patterson meets with.
For those folks who were wondering exactly where a "football" representative would be within the search, this is a key point.
**
To this point this has been an EXTREMELY straight-forward search.
From the very start, I have said that four coaches were on the initial list.
They are/were:
Jimbo Fisher – Florida State
Urban Meyer – Ohio State
Jim Harbaugh – San Francisco 49ers
Gus Malzahn – Auburn
**
Harbaugh is in the playoffs and I think we can effectively eliminate his name from the list. Regardless of whether he would have made the the move to Texas, the timing isn't going to work out.
Meyer is no longer under consideration.
Malzahn, who has the same agent as Fisher, has been eliminated from consideration.
That leaves Fisher of the initial four. Fisher, of course, will lead Florida State into the national championship game in little more than a week.
**
As some coaches have been whittled away, other coaches have seen their names thrown into the mix.
Bill Powers is said to like James Franklin.
But others on the search committee like a host of coaches well above Franklin (as in Franklin's not in the same area code as others), including Art Briles of Baylor, Louisville's Charlie Strong, Florida's Will Muschamp and Jim Mora of UCLA. They stand prepared to nix Franklin.
**
Why so strong against Franklin and others?
To be clear, the Texas brass wants a coach with a record of winning championships, conference championships at a minimum, national championships preferably.
That's a non-negotiable point by some on the committee.
Of the group mentioned above, only three have won conference championships – Fisher, Briles and Strong.
**
What about NFL coaches?
We may hear about one or two who are actually willing to take an interview within the week.
But as Steve Patterson has said from the outset, college coaching is a "different enterprise" than the NFL.
One key difference Patterson is acutely concerned with is recruiting. Another is building a staff.
Any of the college coaches mentioned thus far could quickly assemble a staff and start recruiting almost immediately.
By comparison, a coach from the NFL is not going to bring a ready-made staff. Some of his current coaches would most certainly be NFL lifers, who make significantly more in the NFL than they would in college.
**
What about Alabama's Nick Saban?
I'm told he's not in the mix. It would take a last-second change of heart by the coach to make any move.
**
That leaves three primary players right now – Fisher, Briles and Strong.
Fisher had tentatively agreed to an extension with Florida State in the $4.2 million range for annual compensation. I am told that FSU is preparing to move that number to just north of $5 million.
Briles is similarly situated to Fisher financially, with one catch. Briles' has an additional $1 million (approximately) more on his buyout than Fisher ($2.75 million vs $4.0 million).
Strong, meanwhile, has a salary that is in the mid-$3 million range with very little buyout comparatively.
**
So where does this leave us?
1. Fisher
2. Briles
3. Strong
4. Wildcard
But this is before the meeting with the T Association later today. We should have more early tomorrow.
