🏈 Penn State's Bill O'Brien "likely" to be named HC of Houston Texans

Crazy how fast he's risen through the ranks of football. If he decides to move on, Penn State fans will be sad. He's beloved around here. He helped bring big recruits to a faltering program and helped bring some honor back to the team.

Word is that Tampa Bay's Greg Schiano is in the mix to replace Coach O'Brien if he leaves.

Rising fast through the ranks is something I'd give Malzahn or Freeze. O'Brien is entering his third decade coaching at either the college or NFL ranks.

If I were an alum from PSU and was hearing the talk that's around about Schiano I don't think I'd be that pleased. Just my opinion, but something about him just doesn't sit right with me.

Schiano knows the recruiting battle grounds better than a lot of other candidates. That would be the only reason why I could see him landing at PSU. Not too much else about him would strike me as thinking PSU made a hit (screw the home run, maybe...maybe a double) with this hire, if indeed he's the one.

Assume O'Brien does leave.

How good does Hayden look at USC for locking Sark in place?

How does Texas feel about competing with Penn State for available coaches?

Two big programs looking for a head coach? Wow.

Schiano hasn't endeared himself to anyone with the way hes handled things in Tampa. He lost that team some time ago. Some coaches just aren't built for the pro game (Saban, Spurier for example) but he has handled things extremely poorly.

Drew Brees passes his physical with the MIA docs, and Ricky Williams doesn't leave to find himself in a ganja haze and the Dolphins are a different team, and Saban never coaches at Bama. Saban was a pretty good DC in the NFL.

What's going on in Tampa has nothing to do with my questions or feelings about him.

With me, it's a "did the chicken or egg come first" type of scenario. I can't tell you which I noticed first; the attitudes and actions of the players at Rutgers or their fan base. One led to looking at the other.

The entire picture became clear, to me at least, when I realized both were simply mirroring the actions of Schiano.

Saban himself has said many times that pro football just wasnt him.

You know, you guys are actually talking about the same thing.

Saban's comments about how the NFL just wasn't for him had a lot to do with roster management. It wasn't as big of a factor as having professional guys believing "if I'm getting paid to do this I don't need a lot of coaching." I'm sure you can see how well that would sit with Saban. :sarca:

Changing the subject of this thread a tad...

Cleveland is now looking for a coach.
Washington is rumored to be looking for a coach soon.
We see O'Brien linked to the Texans in this thread.

And while all of this is going on we have Texas and possibly Penn State looking as well? (This may deserve a thread to itself as I think about this more...)

If you are a head coach in college football, the type of coach that is getting looks from both schools, which one would you pick? Penn State or Texas?

Texas talking about looking at "Championship coaches" or "NFL experienced" guys...and now they've got three franchises they may be in a bidding war against?

I was waiting for it to happen...Cleveland and Saban rumors begin, again.
