... about our matchup with VaTech. Or should I say, he's crying because neither the Jackets or the Dawgs are in on it. Maybe Johnson's got a gripe and all, but hey....find your own nugget Paulie.

The Crying Game

MACON — Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson expressed some displeasure with the choice of teams for the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, the game that will be played at the Georgia Dome on Sept. 5.

Last year’s game matched an SEC team, Alabama, against an ACC team, Clemson. This year’s game pits the Tide against Virginia Tech, the Jackets’ rival in the ACC’s Coastal Division.

<!--startclickprintinclude--><!--begintext--> ā€œHelps the teams that are playing in it, no question,ā€ Johnson said. ā€œDoesn’t do anything for us or Georgia. When you bring in teams in your own conference to showcase them every year in a kickoff game, it’s got to help them recruit the area.ā€

The Atlanta Sports Council, the game’s organizers, reportedly tried to line up Georgia Tech to play UCLA in next year’s game, but the Bruins declined the offer.

ā€œThey’ve got a job to do, and I’ve got a job to do,ā€ Johnson said of the sports council, ā€œbut if you are asking if it helps us, it doesn’t help us.ā€
He's got a point.

We certainly have been successful recruiting Georgia this year and it would be foolish to think last years game against didn't Clemson helped.

Agreed. He's got a gripe, but still I don't think the game was designed with the mindset of specifically helping out the home state U. Two teams from the two selected conferences participate, bottom line.

In all actuality, I like Johnson. I like his brand of football. Had GaTech been in this one I definitely would have watched.

Agreed. As example, Georgia already had their agreement in place with Okie State for opening weekend so they were out automatically this year.

I'd be interested to know if Ga. Tech lost out on some recruits to Va. Tech or Clemson. I can't think of any we've signed that Tech was involved with up until the last minute.
