🏈 OT a bit: Alarming stat on Spurrier at USC...well, maybe not alarming, but definitive.

If there's one kid that's imipressed me it's been Conner Shaw. Tough kid, tough competitor, and as strange as it is write this he's likely the only QB you may recall the name of that Spurrier has recruited and played during his tenure at UofSC.

Now, get this.

He's signed nine QB's since he's been in Columbia and Shaw is the first one that's finished his eligibility at UofSC.

Jevan Snead, Garrett Gilbert, Connor Wood, David Ash (we'll find out soon enough if he belongs on this list), Connor Brewer...I can keep going if you like.

Now, remind me again how many QB's Texas has seriously missed/passed on. The list is longer.

My opinion, Texas has been far worse than UofSC at landing, developing, and to the point of this post, having them finishing eligibility at Texas.

I cringed when a young QB outta Whitewright singed with Texas for this reason alone.

But then again, you'd probably rather talk about Saban to Texas than talk about the issues in Austin.

Texas is indeed another example of a largely dysfunctional quarterback process. At least that's the word I'm hearing on message boards...

In reference to Texas.......Finebaum had an interesting tweet a few weeks back. The last three QB's to win the heisman.....Griffin III, Manziel, and Winston were not recruited by Texas to play the QB position. According to Winston's HS coach he called UT 4 or 5 times to try and get them to come and look at him. Never received a call back. Didn't recruit Winston at all.

Yeah listen to the old guy, Texas has a great track record with QBs over the last decade... especially when it comes to recruiting. Who cares that Mack wanted RGIII, Manziel, and Jameis Winston to come play DB for him... he recruited Vince Young!

My thinking is if a coaching staff cannot adequately develop QBs, then they ought to just recruit raw talented mobile QBs. And that's is just what happened with us with our successful years with Vince Young and Colt McCoy.

And if a frog had wings he wouldnt bump his ass when he hops... what kinda stupid logic is that? There have been three starting Quarterbacks under Nick Saban at Alabama... THREE... John Parker Wilson (2007-2008), Greg McElroy (2009-2010), and AJ McCarron (2011-2013)... guess how many of those QB's ever got benched? Thats right, ZERO... All of his QBs have started at least two seasons (and JPW started three technically but his first season was in 2006 before Saban). Ya wanna compare the amount of wins those three QBs amassed compared to the QBs Texas had had over the last decade? Try again.

It was back in the summer, before fall camp, when the conversation took place about who was the best at developing QB's in the SEC. The majority said Spurrier. It was my contention that could be argued when he was at FL, but not so much with his time in Cola.

It was based on that conversation that I decided to post this thread.

Considering a coach inherits APR scores as well as GSR numbers I suppose we could argue JPW is a player that completed his eligibility under Saban. We could do the same with Greg.

However, the key in that stat about SOS was "quarterbacks he recruited and they completed eligibility..."

That leaves Saban with one at this point. Not one out of nine, mind you, but one out of what?

On a slightly different note we've had discussion over the summer about the number of basketball players who transfer. Is there more turnover at the QB position than any other? That would be a good case study if we compared the number of signees to the number who completed eligibility.

In our case my first guess is we've had a greater turnover percentage in the defensive backfield. Then we'd have to take into account players who started at one position and moved to the defensive backfield: say BJ Scott.

When you made the first post my immediate thought was that AJ was the only QB recruited by CNS that has graduated under CNS. What is the difference? Is the argument hinged on the fact that Spurrier has the rep for the QB coach?

No argument, per se', just an observation. And yes, I suspect it was made because of his reputation for developing QB's.

The original tweet came from a writer for The State, the newspaper out of Cola. It wouldn't surprise me to see some article coming out soon about SOS and the QB's under his watch at UofSC. It's not one of our newspapers so I can't just ask.
