Ohio State Fans Mistakenly Bought Orange Bowl Tickets Thinking Buckeyes Were Playing

The College Football Playoff semifinals begin Thursday night with the sixth-seeded Penn State Nittany Lions taking on seventh-seeded Notre Dame. And while the crowd at Hard Rock Stadium is likely to be full of fans from both sides for the Orange Bowl, it’ll also have at least two neutral observers.

In the other semifinal, the Ohio State Buckeyes square off with the Texas Longhorns on Friday night in the Cotton Bowl at AT&T Stadium. Unfortunately for a pair of Ohio State fans, they will be 1,100 miles away hoping their Buckeyes can continue their playoff dominance.

Penn State beat writer Johnny McGonigal reported Thursday morning that he ran into a pair of Ohio State fans in the elevator at the media hotel in Miami. The fans told him that they accidentally misread the bracket and believed the Buckeyes would be playing in the Orange Bowl.

They did not say when they realized their mistake. You’d think it would’ve been pretty clear and fixable early in the process. But instead, they’re riding it out and going to Thursday’s game between the Nittany Lions and the Fighting Irish.

McGonigal then noted that the supposed students didn’t say whether they literally misread the bracket or misread the way that it would play out. But once the bracket itself came out and Ohio State was on the top side, it could only ever play in the Cotton Bowl if it reached the semis.

There is a glimmer of positive news for those fans. The weather at kickoff of the Orange Bowl is projected to be 60 degrees and sunny. Meanwhile, Arlington is currently experiencing a snowstorm that is expected to last through Friday afternoon. So it could be worse, all things considered.
