| FTBL Nick Saban's contract extension, raise to be approved Tuesday by Alabama trustees

Nearly seven months after agreeing to terms of a contract extension, Nick Saban's new deal will become official Tuesday.

The compensation committee of the Alabama Board of Trustees will meet by conference call at 1:30 p.m. to approve contracts involving Saban and 10 of his assistant coaches. Offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin's initial employment contract is among the documents that will be made public for the first time Tuesday.

Saban's deal, announced Dec. 13, will average $7 million a year, AL.com previously reported. He made $5.5 million last year.

Alabama AD Bill Battle told AL.com last month the final details were being hammered out and approval would come soon.

"It's been agreed to for a long time," Battle said. "Some of it was working on details and looking at other options and things that took some time back and forth. Another was he is very focused on coaching, recruiting and getting him to think about something that's already agreed to, he doesn't like to do that except when he likes to do it.

"Things move slowly in academic circles, much more so than the regular business world. It happens when it happens. But I think everybody's fine with it as it is right now.

Alabama is where Saban said he wants to finish his coaching career after annual rumors of new employment opportunities.

"Terry (Saban) and our family are very happy in Tuscaloosa," Saban said when the deal was announced. "It has become home to us. This agreement allows us to continue to build on the tremendous success that we have enjoyed to this point — successes that have transcended the football field. We are excited about the future and the University of Alabama is where I plan to end my coaching career."

Contract amendments will also be made for volleyball coach Ed Allen and women's soccer coach Todd Bramble.

Other coaches who'll have contract amendments:

-- Defensive coordinator, Kirby Smart

-- Offensive coordinator, Lane Kiffin

-- Offensive line coach, Mario Cristobal

-- Linebackers coach, Lance Thompson

-- Tight ends/special teams coach, Bobby Williams

-- Linebackers coach, Kevin Steele

-- Defensive line coach, James W. "Bo" Davis, Jr.

-- Strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran

During a sit-down interview with ESPN three weeks ago, Alabama athletic director Bill Battle was kind enough to retrace the how and why of Nick Saban’s new contract, which became official Tuesday afternoon. It was, as it turns out, a tedious process. Battle and the administration came to the decision to rework Saban’s deal midway through last season. Looking over the past three or four years, Battle said, “We wanted to reward him and make him want to finish his career here.

Jaw-dropper! Both Kornheiser and Wilbon just said that Saban is underpaid. Wow! Wilbon just pointed out that Alabama athletics brought in more money than all NHL teams and twenty-five NBA teams.

-- Running backs coach, Burton Burns UNDERPAID
But i dont know what the going rate is for Running Back coaches......

LSU's RB coach is also their recruiting coordinator. He's getting paid 600-650K right now. Bobby Williams is making almost twice what their TE coach is getting. I doubt you'll find many RB coaches with as much tenure under their current coach. UGA's McCledon has been there about as long as Burns...he was a GA when Saban was hired and promoted to RB coach in '09 or '10.

(Using LSU as a comparison because they're one of the highest paid staffs in college football as well.)

The release of Nick Saban's new contractTuesday made headlines around the nation. With a $6.9 million salary before perks and performance bonuses, Saban widened the gap as college football's highest paid coach.

Here's a taste of what they're saying around the country about Saban's new deal:
