Though Auburn had just one player picked in the draft, members of first-year head coach Gus Malzahn’s staff fared quite well.
Defensive line coach Rodney Garner, running backs coach Tim Horton, wide receivers coach Dameyune Craig, offensive line coach J.B. Grimes, cornerbacks coach Melvin Smith and safeties coach Charlie Harbison all saw players they coached chosen. Garner and Smith each had two players picked.
If you add one from Arkansas State, where Malzahn was head coach last season, and one from Southern Mississippi, where Johnson was head coach, that’s 10 picks.

Now, a few thoughts of my own:

I first ran across a school using new coaches and players they used to coach when referencing the draft from an Arkansas twitter feed. The tweet I read at first was one talking about how former coaches had three first round draft picks.

I looked at that tweet, well, a little skeptically. The thought was "that's a bit of a stretch to boast about what a coach did with players and the draft."

But, is it?

There's two sides of the fence here. We see what Arkansas and Auburn are doing from the PR side when it comes to their presence—in this case lack of—in the NFL draft.

However, it's important to note one thing.

When Saban took over the Bama program what did we hear about his in-home meetings? One staple was the number of players LSU had drafted that he had recruited.

How much of that applies to what those two schools are bragging about? That would take some research to see IF the coaches listed were involved in those players recruitment.
