Yet another one the barn got away with...

I saw that pic on TI earlier today and the thread said it happened several times. Not only are there 12, it's also five in the backfield...

Looks like Bielema and Saban might have a few others in their court come the off season. Player safety will not be the reasoning, time for the refs to count will be.

Saw in another thread where they said AU got away with 12 men on the field 4 times.

I have a hard time believing they got away with it more than once. If they did, I can't blame them for trying it more often. I would think there would be screen grabs out there of the other examples by now though...

Also, is too many men on the field a reviewable play by a coach? Seems like it should be, if it isn't. Regardless, sooner or later, I think pace of play will be altered to help stop this sort of thing. That's what Saban should be pounding on instead of the injuries drum.

Anyone know who the white hat was in the Barn game last night? That is his damn job! Count the number of offensive players while the back judge does likewise for the defense.

Ken Williamson was the ref...

I didn't get to see but about 40-50% of the game, and while there is zero excuse for missing those 2 penalties on the same play, they were pretty busy throwing flags on auburn much of the night...

I know the Barn were flagged 12-14 times for 140+yds I believe.

I heard Danielson make a comment during their broadcast Saturday that caught me a bit off guard. I don't follow the NFL which leaves me little room to comment on how their officiating crews line up before the play. I could swear he said there's been talk/suggestions on moving one of the officials to the other side of the line in collegiate ball. (Very well may have misunderstood him.)

You're right @TerryP. I watched 5 minutes of the Florida/Georgia game and a Florida RB broke a long run aided by a nice block from the official that lines up amidst the linebackers. At least that was the instance I heard Gary make the comment about talks to move him behind the QB.

The zebra you have embedded is the umpire of the crew. His sole purpose is to catch holding and false starts. As an offensive guy, we always told our receivers to use him as a shield on their crossing routes. If he is said to be a part of the field why not use him?
I believe that the experimental 8th man on the crew holds the position you have embedded.

Now that you mention the UF game, I'm certain you are correct.

I wondered if it was the eighth official. I checked both AU's and UM's official site and according to both of their game stats pages there were only seven officials for the game. (I've not seen a report on which games have eight this year.)

According to what I've read, he also is responsible for counting offensive players. After looking around I did run across an article about the NFL moving him in 2010 due to injuries to umpires.
