Mississippi State will allow highly touted signee Jeffery Simmons to enroll in school and join the football team while facing misdemeanor assault charges for striking a woman during a fight in March. The altercation involving Simmons, his sister and another woman happened in his hometown of Macon and was caught on video and posted on the internet. Simmons can be seen landing several punches to the upper body and head of a woman who is lying on the ground.

Confused, how can the SEC exclude transfers from other universities but include high school students? Makes zero sense to me...

Perhaps, because it doesn't meet their definition of serious misconduct? The charge was misdemeanor, simple assault and disturbing the peace. He wasn't charged with domestic violence. That falls on the legal system in MS more than the SEC. If he'd had a weapon, or had the victim been hospitalized, it'd be a different story on the charges.

The SEC passed a rule Friday banning its schools from taking transfer athletes who were dismissed from their previous program for ā€œserious misconduct.ā€ It defines ā€œserious misconductā€ as ā€œsexual assault, domestic violence or other forms of sexual violence.- SI article

Feel like they're going to be modifying the wording on that to include incoming high school recruits. I don't agree with this, it's my opinion the SEC screwed this one up, as they should have included them in the original rule.

I don't know what triggered him to react that way, but seems like a bunch of bullshit that he's not in jail (regardless if the victim doesn't want to press charges).

The line keeps getting pushed as to what schools and society will accept.

I don't know what triggered him to react that way,

A societal norm for the area he grew up in? I don't know.

If you recall, when they announced this new rule one of the points brought up here was how loose and ambiguous "serious misconduct" was as a descriptor.

I'm still of the opinion those that paint "man hitting women" with such a broad brush are missing the point of how some people act. Just a few days ago I was hanging out with a few people who were playing in the "City's" for the APA here in Charleston. One female questioned a call by the guy keeping score and was told the rule, how it applied, etc. Even though all of her teammates were telling her the call was correct, she kept getting more and more vocal with a lot of profanity and vulgarity mixed in with her rant.

It got to the point she was "up in his face" cursing, pointing a finger in his face, and continually poking at him. I'm sitting back thinking, "that girl needs to STFU." After dealing with this for a few minutes the scorer looked at her and said, "if you don't back off, I'm going to forget you're a female." That happened two more times ... finally he said, "last warning." She backed off.

Understand, the winners of the "City's" gets a free trip to Vegas for the Nationals. There is NO DRINKING with these teams considering how much is on the line.
If you can, imagine yourself in that situation. I won't begin to judge ... because I can't say how I would have reacted being cursed at, poked, threatened, etc.

In the same light, I have no idea what that area is like for Simmons. We do know these two females in the fight had been going at each other for years. What happened to make Simmons jump in? No clue. But, without that knowledge? Who am I too judge?

I don't agree with Miss State allowing him in, but much like our issues here, we aren't privy to all information.
Like @TerryP stated, the area a lot of these kids are raised in now, their is no distinguishing a difference between male and female, you confront someone, you had better be prepared for a fight! I see it even in the elementary kids I teach! It doesn't matter that we as teachers try to instill proper rules and interactions, house rules win!

Going on your story the guy did everything right. She never touched him and he never touched her. I have no issues if he continued to warn her and her not backing off, with him shoving her and creating some space from himself. I myself probably would have shoved her out of my face after a warning or two. With Simmons, there was no reason for his actions. He could have broke the fight up. There were no weapons and no life threatening instances. He just felt he needed to help out a family member when she didnt really need it. Let's not forget the guy is like 6'5-~300 pounds and a five star blue chip athlete. So no matter where you come from, it still isn't right and I firmly believe somewhere along the lines he has heard do not hit a women. Just like we have all heard don't do drugs, go to college etc.

Bingo. Not to mention, she was already fighting another female. No reason for him to get engaged and hit her NUMEROUS times while she was on the ground.

Pretty clear in the video that nobody stepped in to tell him to back off.

I'm still of the opinion, he shouldn't be playing and he should be in jail.

We don't know any of that. A very short video clip has had people construct a story and this is the one you've chosen to believe. As example.

"She never touched him." Only a few people know the true answer about how many times she's touched him throughout the years.

I'll tell you what we do know. The law charged him with simple assault and disturbing the peace.

. He could have broke the fight up.

ith Simmons, there was no reason for his actions.

There were no weapons and no life threatening instances.

. He just felt he needed to help out a family member when she didnt really need it.

None of you know. None of this I know.

If you're going to believe the story as it's told, you also have to acknowledge this was a bad neighbor, and it was an argument that had been going on for years.

What right was it of theirs to say those things in the first place? They don't know what's going to happen, where its going to happen, why it's happening.

It's no different from Cam. The story hasn't been told in its entirety, or truthfully. It's the right thing to do in his case is let it be settled before judgement?

We've heard don't strike in anger as well, have we not?

:headscratch: :bolt: Off to see if you've posted in the Cam thread ... :D

In my fighting days , when you knocked someone one their arse you gave them the option of getting up for more or tapping out by staying down , but at the end of the day everyone went home .This culture today , you better not go down or you get kicked and sucker punched , or jumped by multiple people . Most people now a days don't respect themselves anymore so they don't respect anyone else . It's a shame !

I understand that, and I don't claim to know the whole story. I have no doubt the lady he hit was not innocent in the matter, but that still doesn't excuse his actions. I'm a guy that would rather take it outside and trade some knuckles rather than sue somebody, but I also know a fist fight with a woman isn't going to solve anything. This whole "we don't know the entire story" is pretty misleading as we saw all we needed to see with the video footage. Saying that is excusing the violence and stating it was ok if under the proper ideals to take action. I take that as America falling a part and condoning violence, hence why these poor areas around America will never see peace and while violence will always hinder a large population of American youth that live in these poverty stricken areas. If I remember correctly, there were little kids all around this hooting and hollering while the little babies cry because they don't like the violence, so what is that teaching? If he attacked a murderer, rapist, or a child molester, that's one thing, but a yapping fat neighbor is an entire different story. His actions being swept under the rug is exactly what will continue to push the envelope that athletes in particular can get away with anything s long as they can offer someone some kind of happiness or excitement.

Having been in education for 22+ years, I'm telling you now. The old adage of "not striking a woman" or letting "2 people settle their differences " is LONG GONE in today's society. 2 people of the same gender may start one on one, but I'm telling you, if one is getting their ass kicked, 3-4 others will jump in to help out, REGARDLESS of their gender. As educators, we try to educate and instill good morals and character in the 7-8 hours a day that they are with us. The problem is, the other 15-16 hours a day plus the weekend that they aren't with us!!

I think his apology tweet or post acquites rash judgement and offers a glimpse inot his thoughts in hindsight.
What? Acquit?

The rash judgment I'm about is found is found in a lot of places right now. Rachel Baribeau's rant on Finebaum yesterday is a great example. You've shown rash judgment citing things not known, and even more so making a judgment based on five seconds of a film of a fued (for lack of a better word) that's been going on for year's—as in multiple year's.

Ya know, you and I have been down this road before. I've said it doesn't matter in the end, but I've found you to be judgmental on other issues. It's just a difference between the way I look at the world and the way you choose to do the same.

***On a slightly different note: In a PR's point of view, Mullen would have been better off not to suspend him at all. The one game, magnified by the opponent, just added more issues to the situation. I don't believe it was a good move at all.

That's a good point. By not outright stating the situation, it keeps the media and sidewalk fan bases a lot more quiet on the subject...Say like a certain Bama player last year.
