šŸˆ Miss State DC to Florida?

Because it's a lateral move. Collins has done a good job at State and seems to be an excellent coach. I would think he'd be looking for a head coaching job. Maybe he sees Florida as a better opportunity to get exposure before moving into head coaching, but I'm wondering if it didn't have something to do with this:

Mississippi State offense was 8 of 21 on 3rd down conversions and had the ball 10 mins longer that Ole Miss. The same defense that didn't have to cover Treadwell... The same defense that forced Ole Miss to punt 8 times and got an interception. And he "rips" the defense and not the offense who scored 17 points.

I didn't watch the game either by the way, I was listening to it on the road while driving back from Orange Beach, flipping between it and the UF/FSU game. Just looked those stats up on ESPN.

Mullen calls Collins’ new job at Florida ā€˜a lateral move’

The established culture in the SEC is that the Florida Gators are a power program and the Mississippi State Bulldogs are perennial bottom-feeders who make the most of their limited resources.

Even after Mississippi State’s first 10-win season in 74 years and back to back disappointing campaigns in Gainesville, that perception hasn’t changed. But as far as MSU coach Dan Mullen is concerned, there’s not much separating the two programs.

He admitted as much when asked about defensive coordinator Geoff Collins’ move from MSU to Jim McElwain’s new staff at Florida on Tuesday.

Mullen is hinting that serving as the defensive coordinator of the Gators is no more glamorous than serving as the D.C. at Mississippi State. And that’s saying a lot considering Mullen’s former ties to the Gators as their offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2005-08.

The head coach’s comments do fall in line with his recent declarations that he’ll remain at Mississippi State, even after his name was heavily associated with Florida’s former head coaching vacancy, at least in the media.

McElwain reportedly reached out to Mullen to ask about talking to Collins regarding the defensive coordinator vacancy, which Mullen found to be a classy move.

So it seems Mullen does not have any disdain for McElwain, at least not publicly, after UF poached his defensive coordinator.

Nevertheless, he still found an opportunity to throw shade on an SEC rival, something Mississippi State is normally unable to do with its lack of football tradition.

I don't see it as a lateral move at all. Even though UF experienced a rough couple of years, they still have a ton of talent and reside in a talent rich state where kids will stay close to home. Miss State will be losing a ton of talent on defense. Always strike while the coals are hot!!

I agree because this is a bit different than Nuss going to Michigan, which was a lateral move (In earlier years I wouldn't have typed a thing, but if you look at the directions Bama and Michigan are going in now...). UF is down, but Mac has a chance to do something pretty good there, esp. with the talent UF can bring in. As 93 said, State is losing a LOT, and Collins isn't Smart (haven't seen it yet).

Time will judge if Mullen is right. He'd be pretty smart to keep his mouth shut about this matter from now on. He could potentially damage his recruiting if he keeps up the yammerin.
