Ryan Kelly remembers the heartbreak he felt as he watched Auburn’s Chris Davis race from one end zone to the other on the final play of the 2013 Iron Bowl.

As Auburn fans flooded Pat Dye Field by the thousands, the dazed then-sophomore center made his way to the visitors’ locker room beneath the Jordan-Hare Stadium stands.

ā€œIt was kind of a blur after the end of it. … I just kind of walked off the field,ā€ Kelly said Monday. ā€œThat’s all I want to talk about it. It wasn’t a great feeling. A lot of guys on this team were there then. You definitely don’t forget something like that.ā€

The game ended on a single play — the ā€œKick Sixā€ — that will live in infamy (or glory) for both its sensationalism and improbability after Davis fielded a short 57-yard field goal try a foot inside the back of the end zone and returned it 109 yards down the home sideline for the game-winning score as the Tigers knocked off the top-ranked Tide, 34-28, at Jordan Hare Stadium.

Auburn would go on to win the SEC championship and come within 13 seconds of winning the national championship.

Meanwhile, Alabama — which won back-to-back national titles in 2011-12 — would suffer a hangover loss to Oklahoma in the 2014 Sugar Bowl.

The Iron Bowl traditionally has national implications, and it’s no different this season with the second-ranked Tide needing to win Saturday to secure the SEC West title and a trip to the SEC championship game in Atlanta.

ā€œI don’t think I have to tell anybody anything they don’t already know about this game. The Iron Bowl is one of the great rivalries in college football,ā€ coach Nick Saban said Monday. ā€œIt means a lot to a lot of people in this state as well as all over the country. It’s certainly an opportunity you appreciate as a competitor.ā€

Even after delivering a 55-44 thumping last season at Bryant-Denny Stadium, there are some unresolved feelings regarding the game two years ago.

ā€œI know I remember being on the sideline, me and Landon (Collins) beside each other and just watching (Davis) run down the field,ā€ senior linebacker Reggie Ragland said. ā€œYou just drop your helmet and just walk off the field in disbelief, and you’re sad.ā€

But, for many of the now-seniors who watched the veterans on that 2013 team come up short after back-to-back national championships, the disappointment felt that day is still fresh.

ā€œ(I remember the) look in the eyes of some of the seniors and you see them crying in the locker room and stuff like that,ā€ Ragland said. ā€œThat hurts your feelings, knowing you didn’t do your job enough to get the win for them. So we gotta come out and we gotta do our job and gotta try to get this win.ā€

Senior quarterback Jake Coker remembers watching the 2013 Iron Bowl with his family in Mobile while recovering from knee surgery earlier that month while still playing at Florida State.

ā€œI couldn’t believe it happened. … (Of course) it is what it is, it’s over now,ā€ Coker said Saturday aftera 56-6 win over Charleston Southern. ā€œAt that point, the recruiting process, all that (with Alabama) hadn’t started, so I was just kind of more in awe (of the play) than anything.ā€

Still, there are many around the Alabama program who prefer to focus on what’s ahead Saturday, rather than look behind.

ā€œI don’t really think about it that much. Of course, it kind of gets brought up, and you start to think about it more around the time we’re starting to prepare for Auburn,ā€ senior cornerback Cyrus Jones said. ā€œObviously, we know it happened, but it’s in the past and I don’t think that’s going to be on our minds that much when we roll into Jordan-Hare on Saturday.ā€

While some aren’t interested in rehashing the past this week, the way Alabama’s last trip to Auburn ended lingers.

ā€œIt does, but it’s not going to fuel how we play,ā€ Kelly said. ā€œWe’re going to have to go down there and execute. They are a really good team.ā€

In my opinion, this is where that 3.5 million dollar video board they installed is going to come back to bite them in the ass.

I can't tell you the number of times I've seen the question, "how many times are we going to see the Kick-6?" My answer has always been, "the rest of your life."

Let's twist this around a bit ...

How many times do you think Auburn is going to show the "Kick-6" on the video board Saturday?
Second question. How many people have you seen comment about what Kelly and Jones have said to the media the last two days? "Bulletin board material" has been the popular refrain (leading to fret.)

Now ...

Put yourself in Kelly's shoes for a minute ... imagine yourself warming up for this game and seeing that video once, twice, or probably three times before kick off.

It's about like the UGA blackout as I see it ... only going to piss a few off and will focus many, many more.

I like how when I read articles about the kick six and the 2013 Auburn team, they say that Auburn came within 13 seconds of winning the national championship instead of just saying they lost. Guess what? Coming within 13 seconds of winning is still losing.

Agree 100%

They will show it many many many times from many angles in huge, high definition.

It is probably the biggest and best thing that will ever happen for Auburn.

I hope our boys watch it every time. I hope they get mad and angry. Make them pay. Show them Bama football is back in town and ready for revenge. This is the only time in my life I will support running up the score. Win 150-0. Make every orange wearing twat in the stands cry. Make them rue the day.

GO FOR THE KILL!!! Roll tide.

"Got a second?" We've got FIFTEEN! Hopefully soon to be SIXTEEN.

Bama NEEDS to skull drag these clowns in the worst way. I just read the most delusional, laughable article on al.com, and that is really saying something, because there have been some doozies on there before. The "writer" actually said something like "should Alabama pull off this improbable win". At first, I really gave that stupid son of a bitch the benefit of the doubt and thought that he meant to say "should auburn pull off this improbable win". No. He really meant what he said the first time. He went to toss out a shit ton of stats and say how Bama has gotten better, while auburn has not, and that the gap between the two teams right now is as wide as it has ever been. But, yet he turned right around and implied that auburn was still the better team, and had the better players, more depth, and better coaching. I mean, REALLY NOW??! I have asked this before, and I'll ask it again. If auburn and their fans are SO confident that thet will win Saturday, then WHY in the world have their fans sold their tickets to this game? Why are Iron Bowl tickets at Jordan Hare SO easy to come by this year?

Here is one thing that Johnson or White will have to see from over the line, looking at them!
