Joe Pendry isn't done helping football teams in the state of Alabama.
Pendry, who recently stepped away from his role as a special adviser for the Crimson Tide, has been hired as the general manager for the Birmingham franchise of the new Alliance of American Football professional football league, according to sources.
The soon-to-be 71-year old Pendry was Nick Saban's right-hand man with Alabama. He was the Tide's offensive line coach from 2007 through 2010 and then moved into the special adviser role after retiring from coaching.
Before joining Alabama, Pendry spent the previous 21 years working in the NFL, including stints as an offensive coordinator with the Cleveland Browns (1985), Kansas City Chiefs (1989-92), Carolina Panthers (1995-97) and Buffalo Bills (1998-2000).
"He was a great offensive line coach here and did a great job recruiting guys to come here as offensive linemen," Saban said of Pendry in 2016.
"Even after he retired, he has been a very valuable part of making sure -- as coaches -- we are doing things fundamentally the way they need to be done so we can help our players grow and develop. He is a great friend who is very much trusted by myself and everyone in this organization as the grandfather, so to speak, of this is how we need to do it right."
In addition, former Philadelphia Eagles front office staffer Trey Brown will work in personnel for the Birmingham team, per sources.
The 33-year old was most recently the Eagles' director of college scouting. He has worked in personnel for both the Eagles and the New England Patriots.
