We all know things like this are released on purpose. A lot of the time it's to cover, or offer an alternative, to "bad news."

I'd almost bet the Auburn staff is hearing about their SEC record being mentioned on the recruiting trail. I would bet players are considering the fact Gus may not be there next season.

How does this sit with those covering Auburn. From one of the most entertaining of those ... (found this on another site an hour or so ago.)

Well, they try to release what they perceive as potential bad or controversial news during times when it will be overshadowed by other events. They've released FOI requests during postgame A-Day interviews, right before the start of the 2013 Georgia game, etc. They think it's cute or strategic. I think it's lame

I don't know why they're afraid of what's happening on the recruiting trail right now. Any commitments aren't binding and won't be binding until after the timeframe that Gus would be fired. Did Gus convince them that they needed an extension to make recruiting easier?

It's really ironic to me, I thought the gus bus has been ahead of schedule with their recruiting. Given past results, a quality DC bailing and probably the best recruiter on staff Dameyune Craig leaving, it started to look like a ship that wouldn't sail. So if they were doubling down on recruiting, even then, Jacobs extension feels like overkill.

When was the last time Auburn had a head football coach that left on good terms (i.e., he wasn't fired or forced to resign)? Not Chizik, Tuberville, Bowden, Dye, or Barfield.
