🏈 Joe Paterno statue taken down

Bobby Bowdon is now, once again, the winningest coach in college football. What about that?

CBSSports and I are apparently wrong. But NCAA penalties shouldn't decide who's the winningest coach anyway. Arbitrarily "taking away wins" isn't really possible. Powerful as they are, the NCAA has no time machine.

If there's one thing I dislike about the penalties issued to PSU it is the vacating of the wins. Those games were won or lost on the field and nothing should change that. Yeah, I'm still mad about the wins we had to give up.

It is one of the stupidest penalties out there. I heard one of Penn State's players, Adam Taliaferro, say today, "Are they going to tell me I didn't break my neck and have to have a steel plate inserted?" Granted, he's stretching it a bit with that analogy, but the point remains the same.

Paterno has still won more games coaching than anyone else. An asterisk doesn't change that. (FWIW, the only penalty I agreed with today was the 60MM fine...it's the only one that actually accomplishes something for the greater good. And, that's still a little suspect considering they said PSU couldn't take the monies from other sports but didn't say they couldn't take it from that academic side.)

is it fair to wonder what the headlines would be if it were the swim team, golf team..heck even baseball team? something not as high profile as FOOTBALL?

Let me answer that question with a question.

Can you tell me the name of the school that fired a head coach, women's basketball, who had advances and sexual contacts with students on her team?

BTW, call this irony or whatever you will.

With these vacated wins, do you know what the last game PSU officially won now is?

Nov. 22nd, 1997
Penn State 35 - Wisconsin 10.

The winning QB- Mike McQueary. And, of course the defensive coordinator was...

I want to say I remember the story but not the school, is that your point, in as that I don't remember?

Not sure how that answers my question

Pretty much is my point. There weren't a lot of headlines regarding that story and it happened to actually involve student athletes.

If it were one of those minor sports you mentioned I doubt we'd hear much more about it other than the original story. I SERIOUSLY doubt the NCAA would have stepped in.

LSU was the school, btw. Pokie was the coach.

They did say that. Can't be tax payer money either

I'd say the Paterno family could easily swing at least half of the first year's installment, especially considering all the money they've saved by him kicking the bucket before he was charged. If they are any kind of people, they will contribute.

They didn't say that specifically in the presser, which as I stated was the only thing I had read about this up until this point.

This article proves what I've been hearing. It was a ruling from a bully platform.

Think what you will, but I'm sure we can all agree that the NCAA was in a no-win situation here. Not sure what they could've done, really.. and nobody would've ever agreed no matter what. They couldn't have just done nothing, though, and ignored the most vile scandal to ever take place at a US university, and then turned around to discipline any other program ever again with any credibility. They may as well have ceased to exist today.

I also think that all this talk of "this is as bad - maybe worse - than the death penalty" is a pretty big stretch. There is a reason PSU negotiated these terms to avoid that, so obviously they know that's not the case, too. They will be back one day, and probably just in time for a new generation of students and fans who can be part of a creating a new legacy for PSU, since they won't remember anything about JoePa or the scandals except for stories.

I agree with you Terry, the fine was about the only part that was appropriate.Even at $60 mil, that is a drop in the pan. NCAA once again overstepped their bounds and came up with a punishment in haste to satisfy the blood thirsty media.
