🏈 Javier Arenas in a David Palmer type role.

I may be off base here but, I would like to see #28 in some direct snap type of plays. I would also like to see him run some screens. Do you think this will ever be considered? I know there is alot on his plate with playing corner and punt return. Maybe Dre Kirkpatrick or another corner could take his positon on some plays if the game is already decided in the 4th quarter. Or someone else could return punts. He is just so good in open space making people miss. What do you guys think? :a:

I think you're off base on this one. I understand where you're going with this but I would hate to see Javier taking snaps on offense because that would indicate to me that we have problems with our talent level. If we can't find someone to provide explosiveness on offense (other than Julio) then we're in trouble, considering we've supposedly brought in all-world talent.

What you suggest could happen, but I'd bet on us seeing someone like Maze, or another receiver, in a more versatile role.

Please do not take offense to what I am going to say. I am not arguing just making a point.
Did it seem that we had a lack of talent at fullback when MT. Cody came in on full back? I just see it as mixing things up a little. We did it with the deuce. We also ran some draw plays with Prothro. I just don't see Javier being to far off the skill level as Palmer.

Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together.

No, we weren't necessarily lacking talent in the fullback area...but what we were missing is a 300+ pound fullback that has the ability to flat out run two or three people at once. So Javy and Cody are two way different situations. With Javy...yeah he's fast and talented...but we already have guys on offense that are fast and talented. Returning kickoffs and punts is a lot different than taking a direct snap, and I just don't see it translating to him bringing anything new to offensive personell that we don't already have in speedsters like Grant and Maze.

Cody played an H-back role in a 3 TE set...

Just sayin'...

And Huber would not have able to move the line like he did.

I get the jist of the points that are being made. I just don't fully understand. Did we not have Lassic and still use Palmer? I do see a difference though in that Palmer played Quarterback in High School. I think different guys are good for different things. Maze I didn't see alot of Yac last year so I wouldn't know of his elusiveness. Grants fast but the same thing applies. The only player that we have that would come close to what I'm expecting is Upchurch. Maybe I'm just off base on how gifted I think Javier is and would be in this roll. Thanks for the correction Terry. I was not sure if it was fullback or not where he was playing. I tried looking for the position that Cody was lined up in on google prior to my post. I really didn't have much luck.

A few thoughts on this.

While we have good memoryies of Palmer, he really wasn't a game breaker when he was in a "rushing" position. I recall most of his carries came from end-round runs, and very few from a direct snap situation.

If we look at last year as an example to work with, we had three running backs that averaged right around what Palmer did when he carried the ball. He ran the ball less than 100 times when he was playing for the Tide and averaged right at 6.5 yards a carry.

Here's what needs to be considered. Palmer, in '93, had about the same number of carries in that one year as he had in '91 and '92 combined. Why? Williams was the only player that was consistently getting the yards our three RB's had on average last season.

If we have a problem getting yards out of more than one running back next season, then I can see someone considering getting one of our athletes involved.

But, Arenas? I have to ask why considering guys like Maze, Hanks, Grant, Goode...I'm stopping there, but you know we could continue with a few more names before even get into the incoming class in August.

One other thing I believe you have to consider.

Avoiding a defender who is running full speed at you head on versus avoiding a defender who has the job that is based more on a pursuit angle as much as it is getting down field... - see where I'm going?

Palmer and Pro were strictly offensive player's too. IMO we have plenty of offensive explosive talent now where we don't have to take reps away from Javy on defense. And yes, I don't think we had an abundance of explosive offensive players when Palmer was around.
