Ryan Englebert welcomed a freshman to his gym more than three years ago when he opened Englebert Training Systems (ETS) in 2010. The teenager had high aspirations and knew he was willing to dedicate himself to accomplish his goals. He needed a master plan to get there.

Coach Englebert isn't one to end dreams. He sat down with J.C. Hassenauer, four-star center from East Ridge High School in Woobury, Minn., and mapped out how to accomplish the lofty goals.

The Journey
"J.C. started training in our facility about a month after we officially opened," said Englebert. "He was a 185-pound freshman. The rest is history.

"J.C.'s story is one I tell all the time. I did a personal evaluation with him on his first day. We discussed his strengths and weaknesses. We talked about his goals. He was only 5-foot-10, 185-pounds at the time.

"One of his goals was to be the No. 1 center in the country. You never want to shoot down someone's goals. His dad (Michael Hassenauer) is only about 5-foot-8. We definitely were wondering where he would get his height from. You don't want to mention it to him. You just have to go to work."

Hassenauer is now 6-foot-3, 293-pounds. He has great strength numbers which includes 375-pound bench, 500-pound squat and a 31.5 inch vertical. The most impressive number is probably his 4.37-pro agility time.

"He has been consistent," Englebert said. "He hasn't missed a work-out in three years. He would run through a brick wall if I asked him to. He is passionate and very dedicated. At the end of the day he ends up ranked the No. 1 center in the country. It shows what kind of person he is. He set high goals. That's the kind of work ethic he has as a player.

"He played his junior year at 255-260-pounds. He was told by Alabama he needed to put on some weight. He stayed true to his nutrition. He weighed in at Alabama's camp this past summer at 293-pounds, and his body fat went down. His speed, agility and strength improved. He wanted to put on weight and do it the right way. He followed a nutrition plan. It blew our mind how well he adapted and stuck with it.

"He is in the gym five days a week. He goes through pretty intense work-outs. We give him two days off. He wants to be here every single day. I am sure Alabama will send him something when he signs. We have a good system here with what we want to do with him. We want him to be at the prime of his physical attributes when he arrives at Alabama.

"I will look over the work-out program. There are probably some things we can implement in the work-out routine. We have prepared a lot of guys in the past who are playing at the next level. We take a lot of pride in it. We are confident in what we are doing. No athlete has the same work-out. J.C.'s work-out is 100-percent geared towards him. We obviously know him pretty good after working with him the last three-and-a-half years."

The football player
"Alabama is getting an every down player," said Englebert. "He doesn't take any plays off. He is a ferocious interior guy. The way he trains, practices, and plays is all the same. He doesn't just want to get by. He wants to get better. He wants to end a play on top of someone driving them in the ground.

"He plays in between the whistles. He is not going to back down from anyone. He is going to work his rear end off. He is going to be prepared when he gets down there and be ready to compete. He is athletic, powerful, nasty, and everything you want in an interior lineman.

"I got to meet Coach Cristobal one day. I really enjoyed it, just who he is as a coach. He came by the facility. It was a lot of fun. He is a great guy. I can't think of a better guy to fit J.C.'s personality than to play for someone like Coach Cristobal. They are going to have a lot of fun together. It's a marriage made in heaven."

Bonding with future teammates
Hassenauer suffered a sprained MCL which prevented him from participating in the Under Armour All-America game. He spent the week in Orlando with several Alabama commitments. He will arrive in Tuscaloosa in June as one of two centers in the class.

"It was a lot of fun spending time with the guys down in Orlando," Hassenauer said. "We built a very good chemistry with each other. I spent most of my time with all the Alabama commitments. I watched them practice side-by-side. Guys like Ross (Pierschbacher), Cam (Robinson) and Josh (Casher). They all stood out throughout the week.

"Coach Cristobal told me and Josh that he is going to put the best five guys out there. There is competition wherever you go. Josh is a great guy. I know he is going to be a great teammate. We have a great bond with each other. We plan on being roommates."

Easy choice
Hassenauer committed to the University of Alabama after receiving a scholarship offer stemming from his performance at the Tide's OL/DL camp in mid-June.

"The Alabama brand," he said when asked the reason for his verbal pledge. "The football program and the academics. They have the best APR in the SEC. I love the overall college experience. I felt like I would have a better college experience at Alabama than any of my other options."

Hassenauer will take his official visit to Alabama on January 17.
