Rumor has it that MSU defensive coordinator (and former Bama DC under Dubose) Ellis Johnson has interviewed for the DC job at Georgia Tech and South Carolina and seems unlikely to return to Starkville next season. I don't really see either of those jobs being a huge step up over MSU and I wonder if he has issues working for Coach Croom?

He needs to go wherever he has the most job security. IMO, he's not that good of a DC.

GamecockCentral.com reported a few days ago, maybe Thurs. or Friday of last week, that SOS had interviewed Johnson. Since that report, both coaches have said publicly that they spoke on the phone but no "face to face" had happened. SOS said they were looking at paying 300-400K for their new DC. Johnson is making 175K (per reports I've seen on the Rivals sites) at MSU.

Johnson has some history with Johnson when both were coaching a few years ago, Ellis at the Citadel and Paul at GA Southern.

Tenuta is the guy I'm watching right now. He's done a great job at Ga. Tech! Now, he's looking at Ga. Tech as a possibility (making 400K there), USCe fans want him and LSU fans have been talking about him for a long time.

I hear this a lot. Why do you say that Bo? Did he not coach linebackers on our championship team? I know he also came back to campus during a later time as well (Dubose maybe?).

Anyway, just curious to why some say he isn't very good. Maybe I'm not remembering something.

BTW, I met him back in '92. He was 40-ish at the time and was the 1st and one of the only older men I have ever been interested in. I know that surprises ya'll. :D It didn't work out between us and definitely for the better.

I don't like his style. He tends to run a more read and react defense and I like a defense that attacks the offense.

Do you know how long its been since Alabama has scored an offensive touchdown on an Ellis Johnson-coached defense?

EDIT - I'm kidding a little... actually, I agree that I am not a fan of the read-and-react. I much prefer the system we run now.

You've got a point. :?

But, a good portion of the time it was more us having an inept offense than MSU having a good defense.

Well, it won't be South Carolina.

VanGorder Selected as Defensive Coordinator at Carolina

University of South Carolina head football coach Steve Spurrier has named Brian VanGorder as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, it was announced today. VanGorder will officially join the Gamecock staff in January following the completion of the Atlanta Falcons' season.

VanGorder, 48, comes to Carolina after serving as the Falcons' linebackers coach in 2007. No stranger to the Southeastern Conference, VanGorder served as a very successful defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at the University of Georgia from 2001-04. During his Georgia tenure, six of his players were selected in the first two rounds of the NFL draft.

Dang, Sandra...I'm old! :D

Wasn't Ellis the coach who always wore black on the sidelines?

Just taking '99 as an example (and it's just a point to reference this season) we had the #2 rushing defense in the nation under Johnson. The defensive line coach that year?

Lance Thompson.

The secondary took a lot of flak that year (under Coach Cheese) and ended up ranked #49 in the nation. However, they did end up with 16 Int's.

FWIW, he coached OLB's in '92.
