🏈 Interesting thought

I frequent a hunting forum that has a section for sports that I peruse every now and again.

One of the guys on there was a local in Gadsden and Greg McElroy spoke at their recent Chamber of Commerce banquet. Said that he had a Q&A session and that McElroy had something interesting to say about Adam Griffith and his kicking.

Stated that he thought that the kicking would be fine and that he believes a lot of Adam's issues at A-day was post-4th qrtr issues. Said that the off season weight training takes a lot out of you and that he thinks that Adam will be back on track by August. Found that to be interesting.

OK but why would our kickers be doing the same type of program as the rest of the team? Only things, off the practice field, they should be doing is stuff for flexibility and diet. Maybe some minor lower body workouts but nothing like the rest of the team.

I'm sure there are some things that a position specific and some that are for everybody. Either way, kickers don't get pampered. When I was there, there were portions that everybody did (mat drills and running). If DBs can throw up, so can kickers. I'm not sure why AG would still be feeling the pain 5-6 weeks after the end of the 4th quarter program.

Bottom line is... Unless AG is coming off the 4th quarter program for 85% of his career at UA, that ain't the problem...

Yeah, I get them doing some conditioning work. What I am wondering is if they are doing the weight room stuff that others are doing. If so, that could explain why they may be losing some of the flexibility that is necessary for kickers. Maybe this is why our kickers seem to devolve year to year.

i would bet Saban makes all the players do the 4rth quarter program. Its not just about the players its also a team building exercise. I bet the whole team does it.
The point is the 4th quarter program is different for all positions. Some, within the same position, have different regiments on their workouts. It's all about what needs to be developed.

IE: Shank is working out differently than the other offensive linemen. He needs to shed weight; others need to gain.

I would think the kickers would get at least a little strength work since they may be the last man with a chance to stop a TD on a KO return, and should be able to at least make the return man break stride and slow down.

While Cade Foster's caree was to b charitable, very much up and down, I liked having him as a kick off guy because he could actually tackle.

Didn't he get a concussion once doing that during a game?

I remember someone discussing this about Cade Foster a few years back. As a very good high school linebacker, he kept bulking up to help out on kick coverage. Supposedly, that affected his kicking strength (flexibility perhaps?).

The last kicker that got as much grief on this board as Griffith was Leigh Tiffin. He now holds most of the kicking records. Griffith's performance this year (over 71 percent of his FG attempts were good, 2-2 from over 50, tied the record with a 55 yarder without a tee) was good. How he got there churned stomachs.

Griffiths' touchback percentage may be the best ever for Bama, certainly since they moved the KO back. Last year he kicked off 100 times, 55 touchbacks (one was kicked short, nicely). '10 Foster 84 KO, 10 TB. '08 Tiffin 75 and TWO. '05 Christenson 50 and 14 (not a misprint - 50 kickoffs - and it wasn't a strike shortened season).

I'm rooting for him. Here's to a good year.

RTR,

Tim
