livingcrimson tweeted these yesterday...anyone surprised with these numbers?

What does an unbalanced offense look like?
  • Oklahoma 1878 pass yds, 795 rush yds.
  • Boise 1494 pass, 757 rush.
  • Stanford 1488 pass, 951 rush
What does balance on offense look like?
  • LSU: 1100 passing yds, 1101 rush yds.
  • Alabama: 1307 passing yds, 1302 rush yds.

OU Offensive 2673 yds, 225 pts
Bama Offense 2609 yds 226 pts

Didn't know there were points awarded for being balanced on offense. Everyone knows defense wins titles more often than not. Offensive balance doesn't mean squat if you don't get the ball in the end zone anyway. Trust me, OU fans know all about needing a badass defense to win it all. Not sure why you're even trying to post something like this, everyone knows the SEC is the best conference ever known to man in any sport. Don't need offensive balance stats to prove it.

Well, he's also pointing out that Bama is nearly the same as OU is this year on offense. Which makes us that much more of a challenge for an out of conference team should we meet in a BCS game. Though eventually the SEC title run will end, you can't deny that we own the national championship game lately. I'd like to get a shot at Oaklahoma, but I'm not sure if you guys will be tested until you go against Oaklahoma State. Also, with Wisconsin getting the shot at a conference championship game, if they run the table, the BCS might be more in their favor. We'll have to see what happens. either way it will be SEC vs Big12/Big10

Is there anything else about football that you want to teach us? <sacasm>

In the south, every intersection has a gas station on one corner, a Baptist Church on another, a Bar-B-Que restaurant on the third corner, and a defense that crushes one-diminsional offenses on the fourth.

In this conference a team that can't run and pass gets eaten alive. 2:1 ratio teams are not a threat to dominate. Consider Bama, with two preseason All-Americans at Safety and a LB corp among the best in the game. Consider LSU, with two preseason All-Americans at Corner, and that third DB who is getting Heisman talk.

"Balanced" allows our champion to survive. Balanced is the 5-time reigning National champion. Balanced IS the point.

No, DEFENSE is my point. Much more important than a balanced offense. If you didn't know that, then yes, you need to be taught. I"m telling you, what I actually expected Bama fans to know, is that its DEFENSE that brings Nat'l Champions. Not balanced offense. You can be the all balanced world offense, but if you don't score balance means nothing. Its about your defense. Besides, if your playing a defense that is selling out to the run, then it might help to be pass happy, especially if its working. Its about scoring. Doesn't matter how you get there. Run or pass. Not every offense is built for balance. Not every team can line up and run it no matter what. Like OU for example. We have major issues running when a team knows we are going to. But thats ok, we have a lot of success throwing it. As your fellow Bammers numbers show above. Does it work? most of the time. Obviously hasn't worked in title games recently, but maybe OU will get there and it works this time. Or maybe OU might have a defense that is just as nasty as anyone in the country and shuts down your "balanced" offense. We'll see. OU always has problem with conf road games and theres 3 left that make me nervous for OU.

plano-OU is not going to be as balanced because OUr strength is the QB, Broyles & Stills, and the O-line pass blocks much better than run blocks. Can OU run? Sure, but not at will. Walk-on Dom Whaley found one hole against texas and took it to the house 64 yards out. And outran 2 guys that had angles on him. I'm more excited about the defense being as physical as they are right now. I hope they don't lose that in the ebb and flow of the season. </sacasm>

Why would a team have to load up to stop the run if the offense has no success running? That doesn't make sense. In reality, a team that has no success running ball will see 7 players dropping in coverage. Then when it's 3rd and long? There's going to be a quarterback being assisted off the field.

You show me a team that is one dimensional against LSU or Alabama, pass or run, and I'll show you a team that will get beat by 20 points.

Yes, you're right that if a team is successful getting in the end zone that's all that matters, balanced or no, but the thing is that these unbalanced teams can not/ will not be able to beat a team like Bama or LSU with such stout defenses... that's silly to think otherwise

yes, I'm aware of OU's strength. I also know that the two teams that are balanced (LSU and Bama) are employing "game managers" for QB's so that is also another reason for the balanced yardage. I didn't post this to say that a balanced offense would win anything, I posted it because I thought it was an interesting stat... To me it shows that the unbalanced teams don't have a running game - which arguably is the only way you are you going to beat Bama or LSU...run the ball between the tackles. We know both LSU and Bama have solid defenses, we can also assume that OU has a solid defense this year as well.

again the point wasn't to state what Bama fans already know - Defense wins championships...was merely that the stats show what the top 5 teams rely on. What happens when you take the QB outta the mix - which the other 3 unbalanced teams rely heavily on...

Your posts are typically solid so I am surprised by your unusually condescending way of articulating your point and you seem very "Defensive".

If you want to go down the road of comparing defenses, I will take Alabama's or LSU's over the Sooners any day of the week. If it's the Defense that will when the Championship this year, let's see how you handle the Oklahoma St. offense. Playing Kansas this weekend will prove no more than us playing Kent St. by the way.

I agree, defense is the key. The dirt burglars are ranked 28th, allowing 330 yards per game. Bama and LSU are third and fifth, respectively, allowing 191 and 254 ypg.
