Division I football’s academic scorecard will change Aug. 1.

Football players in the Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision must pass nine credit hours each fall or be suspended for the first four games of the following season. There is a way to earn enough credit hours to eliminate or reduce the suspension.
...

A first-time offender could have the four-game suspension lifted if he passed a total of 27 credit hours in fall, spring and summer. Repeat offenders could only reduce their suspension to two games by earning the 27 credit hours.

Too bad they can't enforce the Terrell Pryor 5 game suspension ;)

I'm going to shoot over to the NCAA site and read this rule in more depth later on, but at first glance this is the first thing that popped out to me.

A first-time offender could have the four-game suspension lifted if he passed a total of 27 credit hours in fall, spring and summer. Repeat offenders could only reduce their suspension to two games by earning the 27 credit hours.

As assuming I'm reading this correctly...two types of players fall into this reduction in the number of games suspended.

One, they'd have to be a sophomore or older so they've got 27 credit hours passed in their "credit bank."

Or two, "if they didn't pass the needed number of credit hours in the fall—let's assume they only have six credit hours through the fall—between spring, Summer I, and Summer II they'd have to pass 21 credit hours. Not too difficult really. Take a full load in the spring (12 hours,) take a class in the interim period (3 hours for 15,) and then two classes (6 hours for 21) in Summer I.

The only drawback in scenario two is the inability to get classes in your field of study when you hit the upper class ranks (Jr., Sr.) because they might be full.

Its funny to me in that, as I recall, a person must be enrolled for no less than 12 credit our simply qualify as a full-time student. This rule sets a bar that will be hard not to trip while stepping over.

Still that way. What I don't know is how WD's count...they still considered full time if they drop before the drop date? Can't recall.
