šŸˆ In your eyes, has Jalen progressed or regressed?

I am of the opinion that he has progressed and numbers prove it. Last year, people argued about his accuracy and that he got all of his yards from the "jet" pop passes and screens. This year, the pop pass hasn't been used and our screens have been fewer as well. Now, I will say that if any DC tells his DB to back off of Calvin Ridley and give him a 10-12 yard cushion, then Hurts better be raising up and firing that seed out to him!!! Take a look at this situational chart on Jalen this year.

I definitely think he's progressed. Biggest improvement I've seen came after the first few games this year which looked more like last year to me... But the last handful of games he's been more patient in the pocket and stepped into some impressive throws. I think having an adult at OC will only help him develop more. Still would love to see the ball get spread out to non Ridley's but the freshman are developing and that will come.

He has definitely progressed and I do not think anyone can argue otherwise. He plays like a senior with his comfort all over the field and his lack of turning the ball over so far this season (knocking on wood). He has allowed our awesome backfield take the reins a little more this year to where I felt last year he had the mindset that he needed to do it all if he could. And that was the true freshman in him thinking that instead of reading through progressions and knowing where his guys were at all times. It feels at times the line hasn't given him enough time to hit the down field passes, but I also feel the defenses he has faced have made sure not to give up the bombs through the air we all saw on A-Day. He's doing exactly what he needs to do to keep us winning and he's shown through his numbers he has indeed progressed.

This year defenses have adjusted to Jalen. They are living with leaving him some open receivers but trying to be sure he doesn't kill them with his legs. It has been working for opposing defenses and when we face a really good defense it could be a serious challenge because he still misses some throws really, really bad.

I haven't seen as much progression out of him as I expected but because of the defensive scheme people are using it does help him with his numbers some. I think he has made some decent progression with his footwork and timing but his accuracy is still lacking.

Jalen is reading defenses, getting the offense in and out bad plays, calling out protection, throwing consistently over the middle, then when the defense is gassed and gutted, usually by the first drive in the 3rd quarter and Jalen should be padding his stats, Tua gets to work on his game and we get to talk about what's up with Jalen.

Jalen does get pulled early but they give him throws that also really help his stats. He is doing several things better including as you point out at the line of scrimmage but he is still not a good thrower and might not ever be. Some of the throws he is missing he is missing by yards not by inches. Shit, he missed a few long balls left and right by 10 yards not just long or short. You expect to over throw them sometimes so that is not an issue but when you beat a DB to the inside there is no safety help and you throw it 7-10 yards to the outside you have missed the proper throw by 10-15 yards. When you miss a 6yard hitch low and three feet back to the line of scrimmage.. it is a big miss and kills the play.

Reguardless, he is our QB and I support him but while progressing at the line of scrimmage, with his footwork and timing he is still very raw at his throwing accuracy as a QB. No hate here though as I love the kid.. just being real.

He is progressing in his reads well. YOu can watch his head movements compared to last year and it's a stark contrast. He also appears to look for his target more patiently when scrambling instead of tucking and running each time.

Excited about the game tomorrow. Getting my corndogs ready.

It's been working?! LMAO

Total offense #12 in country
Scoring offense #5 in country
Scored 40+ in 6 out of 8 games, scored 50+ twice. Yeah, it's really working so much...

Tua time?

Go away.

He's progressed but still tucks the ball too soon and doesn't keep his eyes downfield. IMO, Tua is a better passer and does a great job of trying to find a receiver after the first option is taken away. Hurts should continue to get better. We have to remember that he's still a true sophomore.

His ability to read the defense has increased alot, he actually scans the field and goes through his reads. We haven't attempted the long ball near enough this year or used play-action. That would be my biggest gripe with the offense.

Those that think Jalen "takes off too soon" aren't looking at that right IMO. Usually when he takes off really quick, why is that? Watch when he takes off almost right after the snap. Alot of time defenses are crowding the line when we're in the spread and then the backers drop out, especially in an obvious passing down, and I've noticed this with several teams. They leave the middle of the field wide open. So, Jalen takes off and just about every time gets 10-15 yards and a couple of times a lot more because he broke tackles.

Jalen has a serious confidence problem when passing. He is more worried about making a mistake. That is his nature and it will not change. Every throw he makes he will come to the same crossroads.

I would say that this has some truth to it. I don't know how long he has played the position, in junior high and in HS, but I am pretty positive that he has been told coming along........if in doubt, tuck and run. Don't make a mistake. Don't put our defense in a bad situation. It does get etched into your brain over a period of time. I coached a kid his sophomore year that was going to be our starter. The HC kept screaming at him to protect the ball, don't screw up! It got to the point in a passing camp that he wanted to quit. I told him then, when you make a read and you let that ball fly, be confident. Don't play afraid! Mistakes are going to happen. He ended up a 3 year starter for us and wasn't too bad. Now our HC at the time really didn't throw it much and didn't like to throw it.

JMO....I would use play action and roll Jalen into the wide side of the field in order to reduce all the clutter he has to look thru before he has to make a decision. With 2 receivers wide on bot sides of the field and asking a QB that really doesn't have that confidence factor in his PASSING game is only making his job much more difficult. Help him by at least dividing the field in half. Yes , it is true the defense will see your plan as the weeks go by. They knew our plan last year as well and all the defenders ran to the hash marks before our receivers could even get their.

Not sure if it has to do with his nature or just the way he's being coached up at Alabama. McElroy would take a beating before he risked throwing the football even in one-on-one coverage. AJ came in as a gunslinger yet became reluctant many times to throw the football. Could it also be some of the coaching that's constantly emphasizing don't make a mistake?

I think he has progressed a lot. The biggest complaint I hear / read is his passing ability or lack thereof to some people. I know he has missed some throws to the receivers but at the same time the receivers have dropped just as many if not more they should have caught. I remember Terry Bradshaw arguing that it shouldn't be counted against the QB if the receiver drops a ball that should have been a catch and I agree with that.

I'm thankful we have two good QBs. I wonder could Tua start the game against a fresh defense and do as well as he does when he takes over midway through the 3rd quarter? I hope we don't have to find out this year.

IMO, he really has not been tested where he has to make plays with the game on the line.

I don't know @alabama mike. Jalen made the play in the biggest game of the year last season against Clemson that put us ahead with 2 minutes left in the game. I would have bet every penny in my Sportsbook account that nobody, not even Clemson, would drive 80 yards on our defense with the NC on the line. We only needed one stop, one 3 and out series in that final 2 minutes and couldn't get it.

Jalen, with the game on the line, made the play he had to make then. I believe he could do it again if needed.
