we absolutely need consistency in the passing game. as much love as the media has given us and as happy as we all might be with a #8 ranking, i don't see us beating LSU, Auburn, or Georgia without a more accurate JP behind center.

anyone have any insight into our passing problems?

It's hard to get in a rhythm when you only get 20 snaps in the 1st half(against Ark). Also, when you are popping off runs at 8 to 10 yardsd a clip its hard to just give that up to start winging it. The QB has to get into the flow of the game, i.e. hit a few quick outs or stop routes to get at ease. The same holds true for the OC. He has got probably the first 15-25 plays scripted. If we hit a counter for 15 yards, it often makes it easier to call it again until it gets stopped. For us to win this weekend, we have to control the line of scrimmage on both sides and JPW needs to hit on at least 60% of his passes. Now, he may only throw it 15 times or it maybe 30 it all depends on the film study that the OC has put in yesterday and today.

I won't concede that it is all JP at this point. Pressure seems to find our quarterback way too much and rather easy especially from the right side. I think the receivers need some more flash in their routes. they need to get open sooner or get in a position to win the battle for the ball. Overall I think the entire offensive unit needs to find some rhythm and consistency. They have been able to do that for big games in the past. (see clemson this year and tennessee from last year) If they play like that this weekend we win solid.

I agree 100% The passing game must be there...it must have some balance to it as during the Clemson game....and not just the short passes..the deep threat must be there. GA knows we can run the ball and they may just stack the box, and force us to throw...basically the ole " do it if you can " approach. AND NO TURNOVERS....PLAY 4 QUARTERS....

I don't see a problem. Maybe JP has been a little inaccurate but we haven't had to rely on the pass this season. Our true test will be this weekend, we'll see if there really is a problem.

To win this week we'll have to be sound in the kicking game, be able to contain Moreno, and pass well enough to keep Georgia from putting 8 men in the box.

...a more accurate JP behind center...

SEC:

1) Smelley - 63.8
2) Stafford - 60.8
3) Wilson - 59.6

A stat skewed by the number of passes he's thrown away this season due to WR's being covered up as well. There were at least 4-5 of those this past weekend.

A great point TP. I think twoof JPW's great improvements this year is managing the game better by unloading the ball before a pass rush becomes a sack, and recognizing when the coverage is there and not trying to force tha ball in.

I think that we will be able to contain Moreno on the runs up the middle but i think he may get a few of big gains if he runs to the outside... We have to force them to run the ball and keep the ball away from #8 Green? and their other top receiver (not sure of his name) if we can do that and get our passing game together since they will pretty much shut our running game down we will have a very good chance to win this game... i have faith in CNS, the coaching staff and the players and think we will come away from this brutal fight with a W...

Youy don't need to be a OC to know that the defense is going to blitz JPW hard. Every color comentator says it, and we all know it: JPW likes to be comfortable in the pocket, and when he isn't, balls sail.
UGA is a hard hitting defense, and they will try to stuff the run right off the bat and make JPW show he can carry the load.

I think JPW is a good runner, and we should take advantage of that. I know coaches want him to stick in the pocket, but Saturday would be a good time for him to take a few oppertunities to use the QB draw, or a roll out or just take off if everyone is covered. Like I said, he is a good runner, not great, but good enough to hurt teams.

If he has a good day, average day, holds things together and doesn't have any crazy turnovers, then I think we can win this thing. If he doesn't have to doo too much, we'll be okay.

When everything comes together, we should own the time of possession by a significant margin. Whether JPW has big plays or not, if he MANAGES the game well, and we win the TOP battle, say, by 5 minutes or more, I believe we win, and possibly by a decent margin.

You see, there is a lot of talk about game management right now. And while JPW's numbers are not great, if he doesn't make a stupid mistake like against LSU or FSU last season, then we can and will run and pass with at least some effectiveness. I don't expect to outgain, outthrow, or even outrun UGA. But I do think we can outscore.

My question is this: when we beat UGA this weekend, will everyone then say UGA was overrated and Bama hasn't played against LSU or Auburn yet? I mean, we whipped Clemson, and we beat the stuffing out of three other teams that weren't that good, as we should do. It just feels like Bama's getting no respect, even though we are probably ranked higher than we ever imagined!!

I can agree with that... but i haven't been able to watch all of the UGA vs. AZ ST game yet (so this may be innaccurate) but from what i can tell so far is that they were making some pretty good gains with the short passes and screen passes... anyone else notice any of UGA's weaknesses on defense? or offense?

You are right about them having very few weaknesses, other than possibly lack of intensity at times. However, a good game manager, and everyone else doing what they are supposed to do, and doing it well, can yield a win.

We don't need to look past Mr. Jay Barker to see what an average QB who doesn't get you beat can do. The other pieces are IN PLACE!!

If we should beat the dawgs there will be a chorus of "Georgia's not that good" from the barners, but so what. I was running errands last Saturday after our game and heard some barners saying "but Arkansas isn't that good". I'll take it as long as the W's keep piling up. I would love to hear them saying "but LSU isn't that good" come November.

haha, talk about skewed stats.

Passing Efficiency: Wilson #66

behind Stafford, Tebow, Lee, Smelley, Snead, and Dick.

Passing Rating: Wilson #75

behind Dick, Crompton, Smelley, Hartline, Stafford, and Todd.

Great stats, Terry. There are a few of us that don't automatically place all blame for Alabama's past woes on the QB.

Wilson will play as well as he is allowed to play, as well as the team wants him to play, as well as the offensive linemen decide they want him to play.

I watched the GA / ASU game and GA is pretty solid. They have a solid running attack ( good offensive line ). I get the feeling Moreno likes to go to the outside but he is certainly strong enough to run between tackles. The passing threat is very real...Green and their senior starter are awesome. They will probably prefer to run outside due to Cody clogging the middle...and if so, the LB corp will have to stay speedy and sharp..ASU had problems with this due to lack of pursuit speed. Stafford has a rocket arm and their special teams is pretty good. I think we match up ok...

i'm just saying that whether it is the fault of JP, our receivers, O-line, or coaches, our passing game will have to be more effective and reliable in order to move the ball against UGA.

i don't know if you can find a stat for this, but Wilson's long ball still seems to be missing. in order to run against UGA i think we'll need to force them to respect our deep threat. i'm hoping that Wilson can make them pay for stacking up against our run.

JPW is not very good at picking up the blitz for whatever reason. Maybe his recievers aren't running the right routes when they see blitz. He holds the ball too long. He has to have a hot read.
