Sorry for the OT post. Noticed your Ubuntu tag and wanted to say hi... I ran Ubuntu since 8.04...I tried just about every Linux distro that is out there. I recently installed Mint. Mint 8 "Helena" is based on Ubuntu 9.10, but has quite a few tweaks and is packaged with multimedia codecs in the base install. I know it isn't hard to apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras, but the multimedia integration in Mint is very well done. To me, Mint just seems to work better from a clean install and is compatible with the software in Ubuntu repositories. A lot of the games from playdeb.net work better on my Mint install than they did on my Ubuntu install. I had problems with audio multiplexing in Ubuntu and removing pulseaudio didn't help, but Mint worked right away. Only a few obscure apps don't share. With Ubuntu I had to manually edit configurations to force alsa.
Mint is available with gnome or KDE. I am running the gnome distro but installed kde after getting everything configured with gnome.
Anyway, I just wanted to bring that distro to your attention if you were not familiar with it.
