There's two in San Fran which you've probably heard of: the Nancy Pelosi building and the offices at 50 United Nations Plaza. It is the third one that caught my attention.

There is a federal building in San Bruno they're discussing as well that's named after a former Senator, Leo Ryan. He was one of those who died at the Jonestown massacre in the late '70's.

I don't know a lot about that event. I have been under the assumption it was what I'll loosely call, "cultish."

My question is why name a building after a guy who died at an event like that one? Or, rather, a guy who likely killed himself?

What am I missing?

He was part of a group who flew down to investigate the cult. He wasn’t part of the Jim Jones cult.

Leo Joseph Ryan Jr. was an American teacher and Democratic Party politician who represented California's 11th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1973 until his assassination hours before the Jonestown massacre in 1978. Before that, he served in the California State Assembly, representing the state's 27th district.
