| FTBL GT lands coach

I think Tech hired the best man available. Nebraska, Michigan, aTm... are all going to be looking silly a few years from now.

I'd almost be willing to bet that if some of the other BCS schools came calling Johnson would have considered this opening the best of the bunch. Mainly, because he's returning to an area where he won and he knows the HS's and coaches in the area.

I guess the triple-options group that says that offensive scheme is outdated will see if they are right or wrong.

You make an excellent point. He's still got alot of good will in the area.

Good hire for Tech IMO.

On another note, I guess dabaxter will be a GaTech fan now.

well, i think everyone pretty much admits that the old school offenses that died were resurrected by the spread formations. the increased size and speed of players which began to force teams to air it out has met its match: wider splits between offensive linemen. wouldn't you say?

The post was meant in jest...we still need a sarcasm emoticon! ;)

I agree completely with what you said.

He's in a good area to recruit the players he needs for just that system, much like UF and WVU.

Great pick up. He was the best candidate out there. I don't think Georgia or Clemson fans are very happy with this hire.

Give him 3 years he will own Ga. and Clemson!

Time will tell...he managed to beat Notre Dame this season, and I know that Navy does not have the greatest talent, but he lost to Delaware for the second time in 4 years.

The secret to defending an option oriented offense no secret. It is to play assignment football and play it with discipline. While it is has been said that Johnson will adapt his offense to fit his players, but he has been quoted as saying that he believes a triple option attack would work in a big conference.

It is hard to run laterally against speed. Florida's spread offense is not an option attack, and the kind of QB that WV and UF have does not grow on trees.

I am glad to see PJ get his shot, but I am much happier and more confident over the long haul with who we have.

I don't see why he shouldn't. If you think about the number of ATH you see being recruited that play a number of different position in high school I can't see how it is going to be difficult to find the players he needs.

I’m not 100% certain Johnson will run the Triple Option at Tech.

I don't see the problem in terms of finding the talent to run it, I see the problem as the talent you are playing against being able to defend it.

Defending the triple option is assignment football. The UGA's and FSU's of the word are well coached and play disciplined football, and Ga Tech will not have more speed than them. The passing game is severely limited with a true triple option attack.

If he does run the Triple option at Tech, they will blow out lesser teams and lose to equal or better ones...the teams with the speed to keep Tech off the corners will kill them unless they come in unprepared.

Johnson will have them playing fundamentally sound, but so does almost everyone else. If he converts his triple option to more of a spread / speed option look, he will do fine once he gets his personnel in to run it. I have to admit, I liked our offense when Fran was here, and it had a lot of speed option plays similar to what Meyer runs at UF.

It's not a true, triple-option. Like musso and I were discussing earlier in this thread with the spread formation included in it the assignments and lanes are different than they were years ago.

We'll see, but I'm of the opinion they'll have some success with it in a few years.

Afraid not...
Still a Bama fan.

I am glad he did not end up at Arkansas or in the SEC. If the GT administration allows him to stick with his traditional offense, he'll win a national championship within 5 years. I think he's the best coach in college football and he'll dominate. It will also shut up the idiots who don't understand offensive football who say the triple option won't work.

I just hope Saban can get it together and get Bama in the hunt for an undefeated season and a national championship. I feel like the team will look much better next year.
