Bryant-Denny Stadium - renderring of new stadium spring 2009

TUSCALOOSA | University of Alabama trustees awarded contracts to expand Bryant-Denny Stadium Thursday morning, the final hurdle for the project.

The executive committee, which can act on behalf of the full board, awarded the $46.9 million expansion construction contract to Brasfield and Gorrie in Birmingham, beating out another Birmingham firm as well as firms in Opelika and Gulfport, Miss.

ā€œBrasfield and Gorrie was very aggressive in their pursuit of the project, and we’re looking forward to working with them,ā€ said Mike Lanier, a vice president with Hoar Construction, the company that oversees UA building projects.

The firm also said its crew would work to complete the project by July 10, 2010, roughly a month early, without a payment bonus, Lanier told trustees in a conference call.

The committee also awarded the $4.28 million contract to improve the stadium’s audio system, which be ready for the upcoming football season.

ā€œIt will be one of the best we can get in there,ā€ UA Athletics Director Mal Moore told trustees. ā€œIt will make a huge difference in people enjoying the game.ā€

Trustees also awarded a $343,000 construction materials contract to TTL of Tuscaloosa, an environmental and geotechnical engineering firm.

In response to a question from trustee Marietta Urquhart of Mobile, President Robert Witt said students were getting more seats as part of the expansion.

ā€œWe’re still working out the final arrangements of many seats student will get,ā€ Witt said. ā€œThat is our highest priority to expand seating for our students.ā€

All of the bid packages are part of the $80.6 million, 9,000-seat expansion to the stadium’s south end zone, which officially began this month as crews began the process of demolition of portions of the stadium to make way for expansion.

That sounds great. I can't remember off the top of my head, but how long did the North endzone expansion take?

About the same as this one is projected to take.

Started it before A-day and finished it right before kick-off the following season.

I don't know why, but I'm sort of relieved that the Opelika firm didn't get the job...

Yep, their architectural vision of a skybox is probably more like this:
