| FTBL Glenn Coffee: Does He Really Have a Problem?

Does Glenn Coffee really have a full blown case of fumblitis?

I remember one fumble he had against someone, sorry for the lack of details, it didn't really seem to be his fault.

I think he was falling into a pile of other players as he was being tackled and a helmet kind of awkwardly hit underneath the ball and popped it out.

This could happen to anyone and has happened to every running back at some time or the other. Some balls are just going to come loose when hit the right way and hit hard enough.

I mean, Coffee is not Arian Fosteresque.

i've seen fumblitis in my clinic and diagnosed it on rare occasion. what Glen has is not fumblitis. it is only benign fumblasia - a disorder characterized by an abnormal conglomeration of fumble related events culminating in a period of bench warming. it will resolve without treatment and is not critical.

He has had a few fumbles in the past 3 games that never made it to the stat sheet. He definitely has an issue with the football right now. Supposedly, he has worked to improve it, and by the looks of things, he was carrying it better against Ole Miss, but he still fumbled... more than once.

One thing I've noticed, and you guys probably have too, is that in atleast two of the cases, Coffee has caughed up the ball when someone went under him.

Against UGA and Kentucky both, Glen fumbled when the defensive player went lower than him and seemingly went for his legs. It seems like when Glen "goes over the defender" he loses the ball. It's got to be attributed to the way he's carrying it.

Watch the fumbles from those games again and you'll see a recurring theme. The defender gets under the ball while Coffee dives over the defender, and in both cases, Coffee loses it.

Just go back and watch the replay of the Ole Miss game (incidently it was on CBSCS this evening). There's one run in particularly, he's carrying that pigskin like a Pop Warner back. It was a nice run, too, but the way that ball was tucked in the crook of his arm, it was just begging to be stripped.

That's the way I see it. However, if you start fumbling, defenders will begin to thing more about trying to strip the ball. In that case, two things can happen: they can strip it, or they can look silly and weak trying to arm tackle.

Today, I think Coffee makes them look silly and weak.

It may not be a full blown case, but he dang sure fumbles more than he needs to. I'm afraid it is in his head now.

He better be lucky Coach Stallings isn't running the show, he'd be on the scout time by now with all these fumbles. Go ask Brian Steger. :D

I agree...Coffee does have a problem even though a couple of the fumbles could have happened to anyone. I think that we will see Ingram get more carries as a result of last week's fumble. The reason Coffee is starting is because he is a more complete back at this time than Ingram...Coffee blocks and catches better. Ingram will get better in those areas.
