Montgomeryās Bob Childs desperately wanted to be a linebacker, but the Alabama coaches recruited him as an offensive lineman. He caught a break when one of the linebackers in the high school all-star game went down with an injury. Childs was moved to fill the need and seized the opportunity to show what he could do. From that point forward, he was a linebacker, and a good one. Wielding his intelligence like a weapon, the often underrated Childs became the defensive signal caller and a three-year starter for the Crimson Tide (1966-68).
