First impression on Golesh to auburn... he's better than promoting Durkin, and he'll keep Durkin, so there's that. And maybe he turns out to be their Heupel, but this will be a massive step up for him... and now the Heupel structured offense is in two places in the league (twice on UA's schedule each year). Teams will continue to adjust, Bama and UGA included. On a side note, it isn't an attractive system for the NFL... the chance for big stats and the money will lure good players, but he will run into some recruiting issues in the SEC that he'll have to overcome. Bottom line, they screwed up on Sumrall... a guy that IMO is a much better coach and "program leader". I like Golesh as a person and he's good at what he does, but he's going to have a difficult job in auburn, IMO. I will give them a B- on the hire though.

I think it's probably the best hire they could have done and I honestly hate it. Golesh is a very solid coach. I do wonder how the relationship with Durkin will pan out, considering he has an offensive mindset to play fast and really stretch the field vertically. Whether they score fast or go 3 and out quickly, that defense is going to be on the field A LOT. Regardless, if anyone watched USF, his teams play hard and they'll be a giant pain in the ass.

Sounds like it may actually happen if they can find the money... I was very skeptical that they'd pony up.... if they do, for their sake, I hope they have a plan.

You may disagree, but if I'm them, I'd rather have Sumrall all day long, and they had him wrapped up if they wouldn't have acted all "auburn" with him and tried to "suggest" conditions. Golesh may do well there, but IMO, there's a much greater chance he has them mediocre, mid-league in the SEC. ANd people talk about "fit"... I think that can be overrated some, but this, like Harsin was, is a bit of a weird one. He's going to have to navigate things outside the field that he's never dealt with before, and if he does it his own way, his margin of error shrinks significantly.

But, it's certainly better than promoting Durkin. Or hiring someone like Charles Kelly.

Ok this makes sense now as I did a little googling. Golesh was the OC for the Viles when they broke the 16-17 game losing streak against Bama. Barn always looking to find a percieved advantage that has bama front and center in their decision making process. I guess it is understandable because Bama is the measuring stick for CFB.

Oh I'd rather have Sumerall all day. I don't disagree about that at all. I think he is a true CEO of a program and he immediately changed the trajectory of both Tulane and Troy. He understands the south too. I just think Golesh is not a bad alternative and is definitely a solid coach. I was hoping auburn would auburn the coaching hires and go after Mullen.

What about Mike Tomlin for PSU? Steelers fans were chanting fire Tomlin after home loss to Buffalo yesterday. Steelers haven’t been terrible but have been mid for several years, I think his run (like 18yrs, unheard of in NFL) is coming to an end. 12x in playoffs, 2 Super Bowl appearances, 1 win. He’s only 53yrs old! I think that would be a HOMERUN hire.
I haven’t heard his name mentioned and not sure if he has any interest in coaching in college but the longer PSU waits it makes me think they are targeting someone from the NFL.

Steelers haven’t won a playoff game since 2016, sounds about like Franklin to me.

I agree that Sumrall was the better choice and that they may continue to languish. Let's remember that USF outstripped their conference members (and some power 4 teams) in player spending. Golesh's success can be loosely equated to Freeze at Ole Miss when they had a monetary advantage. Durkin has gotten a whiff of the HC position, and the question is whether he'll obediently drift back to coordinator, create conflict by trying to maintain more control than a DC might otherwise, or bolt for a HC position at the first opportunity.
