🏈 Excuse or valid reason? Meyer talks about swine flu impact on his team last week.

Quite frankly, I'm not sure what to make of this write-up from ESPN's Chris Low.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Florida Gators' flu bug is cause for alarm, at least for coach Urban Meyer and his staff.

Running back Jeff Demps, tight end Aaron Hernandez and defensive end Jermaine Cunningham were isolated in the days leading up to Saturday's game against Tennessee.

Although Meyer did not say any of the players had swine flu, he certainly was worried the devastating virus could hit his top-ranked team.

"It is a panic level of proportion I've never seen before," Meyer said Sunday, a day after his team's 23-13 victory. "That's coming from me. You hear about, I think, Wisconsin had 40 players. Ole Miss had 20 players. My wife, with her great insight, said, 'Do you realize the swine flu and everything is hitting the Florida campus last week.' My gosh."

Meyer said team doctors and his training staff were doing everything they could to prevent an outbreak. Hand sanitizers were everywhere, and prevention checklists were posted all around the training facility.

"We're trying the best we can, but it's real," Meyer said. "We go to the extremes. They get a separate dorm room for them. They get a separate hotel room for them. They put them right on whatever the flu stuff is. Our guys, our team doctors, they're on it as fast as you can get on it."

Demps, Cunningham and Hernandez all played against the Volunteers, but none of them seemed to play up to par.
Demps, who had a 101-degree temperature, ran four times for 31 yards and a touchdown. Hernandez caught four passes for 26 yards. And Cunningham finished with one tackle.

Meyer said Sunday that Demps probably shouldn't have played.
"Jeff did not look right, Aaron Hernandez didn't play like Aaron Hernandez, and Jermaine didn't play like Jermaine. They were beat up pretty good," he said.

Meyer said there could more isolations this week. He was most concerned with Demps, the team's starting running back, because he's on the front end of the flu. Hernandez and Cunningham were getting over their symptoms, Meyer said.
On the injury front, Meyer said linebacker Brandon Spikes will be placed in a protective boot. Spikes missed most of the second half of Saturday's game because of tendinitis in his Achilles' tendon.

The team's defensive captain limped off the field early in the game, got his left ankle taped and tried to return. But Spikes ended up getting pulled and replaced by Dustin Doe. Meyer said Spikes struggled through practice this week and had to be fitted with orthotics.

"It's a pain issue," Meyer said. "It's not a structural issue. It's not a pull, it's a tendon strain of the Achilles' tendon."
Receiver Deonte Thompson (hamstring) also missed the game, but should return against Kentucky. Receiver Riley Cooper pinched a nerve on the first series but stayed in the game.

Asked whether he was worried about the flu also hitting Tennessee, Kiffin said: "I don't know. I guess we'll wait and after we're not excited about a performance, we'll tell you everybody was sick."

I don't know the context in Meyer's flu statement...guess I should watch presser, but if he is using that as reasoning, then he just got called out by a big mouthed loser :)

Thanks planomateo I loved this part:

Visorboy #3. I knew it all along, just waiting for him to show up in a visor:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Well, I guess it depends on the context, but the flu does sap energy and one isnt 100% for about a week until after it passes.

The staff here went crazy about flu outbreaks during the beginning of the season too.

Methinks he is just sore about being called out for not trying to win(to which ive seen alot of people, including vol fans, complain about)

Less Urban wass using that as an excuse, he is just being a jerk.(and he probably wwas)

Good luck to Kiffin if he uses that playstyle against us though, since we are more "here it is, now stop it"

And Florida will have it together in a few games.

I think Meyer was taking an extra jab at Kiffin, in effect saying that the Vols aren't as good as they may have appeared. They're both jerks.

Expect Tennessee to continue to earn moral victories and the Gators to get back to pounding opponents.

I agree that they're both jerks, TG for CNS!!

By the way Mack Brown, on a radio interview this morning, said that the Longhorns got their flu shots TODAY.

Aight, so some Florida players were flu-bugged, but so was Michael Jordan in the NBA Finals [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLQl7UJOYUs[/ame].....

Don't worry about watching the video... just trying to prove a point.
I don't recall Jordan making any excuses... and by the way didn't Mark Ingram play with some "flu like" symptoms just over a week ago.
This flu stuff is very serious, but I think it's becoming too much of a crutch for some.

He said that and he said that Tennessee wasn't playing for the win so he basically took the foot off the gas.

I'm calling BS. Taking the foot off the gas has never been Meyer's m.o. He's tried to blow out everyone he's played.

It's a lame excuse and I agree with Kiffin on this one.

The Spurrier/Fulmer dialogue kept me giggling throughout the nineties. Spurrier usually had a good bit of wit in his comments. So far Meyer/Kiffin does not have the entertainment value, at least not yet.

You're citing one of the most exceptional games in history for what reason? As if to say that illness should have no impact? Its the fricken flu. The flu has KILLED hundreds of thousands through the years. Either you are off base widely, or I'm missing your point completely.

Since he has not said everyone was sick, does this mean that he is excited about his 1-3 team?:lance:

I guess his ROCKY TOP is north of his shoulders.
