al.com is running a five-week series, one video a week, where Eli Gold recalls his favorite memories as the play-by-play guy for Alabama football. Here's week 1:
Oh! How I remember this! I had gone over to Rose Towers to watch this game with friends of friends. We were as loud as Eli and his radio partner (Sorry, drawing a blank). That was such an incredible moment. No one thought we had a snowball's chance in hell once that last drive had crossed midfield.
Rayam's kids went through Thompson here in Alabaster. I didn't teach any of them, but I knew them. Incredibly amiable children and awesome athletes. I don't remember where his oldest son wound up in school. His middle child, a wonderful girl, went to school on a volleyball scholly, and his youngest son just graduated with a football scholly to a smaller out of state school. Thomas Rayam was always around, helping and volunteering when he could. And he always wore a big smile on his face. We will miss that family!
