šŸˆ Dana Holgorsen to Nick Saban: 'Get over it'

DALLAS -- West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen had a quick response to Alabama coach Nick Saban's criticism of up-tempo offenses: Get over it.Holgorsen was asked at Big 12 Media Days about the comments of Saban, Arkansas coach Bret Bielema and others than no-huddle, up-tempo offenses lead to injuries. Their beef is that not allowing teams to substitute leads to a greater risk of injury.

"Yeah, I'd tell him to get over it because it's not going to change," Holgorsen said Tuesday. "It's going into the NFL, for crying out loud. There's people being hired in the NFL that have the background in college football to be able to create a little bit more parity.

"On Monday at the Big 12 gathering, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy, an up-tempo proponent, said fast-paced offenses have helped create parity in college football."Don't see it changing any time soon," Holgorsen said. "So you'd better learn to adapt to it.

The "get over it comment" just amuses me. The quote above grabs my attention.

Just last week I caught a blurb on sports radio from one of the NFL officials stating they would likely slow down the pace of play when the host was talking about Philly and Kelly's offense. The thing that drew my attention the most was it's well within the rules for the officials to do so.

If a substitution is made by the offense, the offense shall not be permitted to snap the ball until the defense has been permitted to respond with its substitutions. While in the process of a substitution . . . the offense is prohibited from rushing quickly to the line of scrimmage and snapping the ball in an obvious attempt to cause a defensive foul (i.e., too many men on the field). If, in the judgment of the officials, this occurs, the following procedure will apply:

(a) The Umpire shall stand over the ball until the Referee deems that the defense has had a reasonable time to complete its substitutions . . .
- Official NFL Playing Rules, Rule 5, Section 2, Article 10

So, while Holgorsen is correct on college coaches transitioning to the NFL, he's quite mistaken to use the NFL as a reason there won't be a shift in how the game is called on the college level.

The allowance of substitution for the defense will change how a depth chart is managed especially at corner and safety. I think it would be physically impossible for a corner to cover a 'go' route three or four plays consecutively with different wide outs sprinting down field. It would be an easy toss over a gassed corners head eventually.

There's a good argument that the defense, in any position, is far more tasking on the body than an offensive position.

If the offense substitutes, the referee's are SUPPOSED to stop play to allow the defense to do the same.

As an aside, I find humor in these other coaches (especially someone like Dana Holgorsen) and commentators using this issue like they are teaching Nick Saban a lesson and looking down their nose at him. I heard one talking head on CBS call Saban a whiner over the issue. Let's see if Holgersen maintains the rhetoric towards Saban if he is around to see next year's BAMA game.

Rushel Shell will probably be his RB if he is still around.
