A few weeks ago we discussed a few of the changes they've proposed for kickoffs and that's all but set in stone—if it isn't already.

I still don't like it one bit.

Did you guys realize that after the NFL changed their rules to this standard (from 2010 to 2011) it drastically changed the game. In 2010 rougjly 20% of the kickoffs went into the end zone. In 2011, roughly 20% of kickoffs were returned. Get this again. Kicks in the endzone went from 20% to 80% in one season with the change of five yards!

I might be a little more comfortable if the touchback was still taken back to the 20. Now, at the 25, the percentages say you can't keep a team inside the 20 much less the 25.

Special teams on kickoffs? This essentially removed any impact they may have. A minor rule change that is going to change the the game in a major way.

The squib kick? Gone.

That's a good thing. I've always hated a squib kick. Unless Alabama was on the receiving end of one.

psychojoe mentioned something on another forum today that made me do a little research and another effect of these rule changes came to mind.

Players can't line up more than five yards from the 35 on kickoffs. How does that affect onside kicks?

Something ive seen left out of most of these type post is the helmet rule now.... if a player loses his helmet on a play he has to sit out the next play.... really? Apparently it is presumed that these kids are losing their helmets on purpose.... I understand that the kickoff/ return rules have more of an impact but just imagine losing Rolo or Cody or Trent or any one of our stars for a play because they gave/took a big hit that dislodged their helmet? Whats next, a half game suspension if the jersey shoulder pad pokes out of the jersey?
Taking your helmet off during play is one thing but an accidental dislodging is another.... playas gonna play

I've mentioned it a few times here and there as one of the new rules that baffles me.

The way the NCAA has phrased it is along the lines of the call the refs would make if they felt a player was faking an injury to stop the clock. That call is subjective, but it pales in comparison to how they'll judge the reason a player loses his helmet in a pile-up.

so....thinking thru this a bit more.

you can actually get your team 5 yds closer on kickoff, try to kick the ball on the goal line or very near the goal line and get a chance to hit the return guy 5 yds sooner. what they are going to create, is more potential for injuries. you get a team that can kick to a spot and have lights out special teams play, gonna be interesting.

side note....aside from faking an injury, can the NCAA stop calling the stupid in the art of shooting fouls that are clearly intentional fouls by the shooter. this whole concept irks me like no other, whether it be in the NBA or college hoops.

I looked at it as if the NCAA is making them buckle BOTH sides of their chinstraps/helmets. If they did this, it would probably cut out 75% of the lost helmet syndrome.
