David Feherty is one of the most popular, outspoken golf commentators in the world.
The North Ireland native also happens to be a huge Alabama football fan.
Feherty, who is now an American citizen, had no ties to the school before he attended his first college football game at Bryant-Denny Stadium in 2005.
After that, he was hooked.
"I've been to a lot of sporting events and heard some extraordinary crowd reactions, but I remember being up in the stadium when the team ran out on the field, and for a moment I wanted my mommy," Feherty said. "I thought what the fucking hell is wrong with these people? It's the damnedest thing I ever heard. They just went completely batshit mental. The atmosphere was so extraordinary; I had never seen anything like it."
Feherty has been committed since that game, where he saw Tyrone Protho suffer a career-ending leg injury against Florida. He's been known to drop a "Roll Tide" or two in his thick Irish accent during golf broadcasts. He's talked about the Iron Bowl rivalry with Auburn graduate Jason Dufner.
Feherty has been to a few Alabama games since with friend and CBS partner Verne Lundquist, who calls the network's SEC Game of the Week with Gary Danielson. His work with CBS and the Golf Channel keeps him extremely busy, but he keeps up with the Crimson Tide by watching games on television and reading local newspapers to see what's happening.
He can't shake the passion he saw in that first game.
"College sports, college football, and the SEC especially, you don't see it anywhere else in the world," he says. "It really is amazing. These are just kids between the ages of 18 and 22 out there playing at that level, and the alumni -- it's like a cult."
Feherty will be back in the state of Alabama on April 16 when he'll host a one-man live show at the Alabama Theater in Birmingham. Fans can purchase tickets for his appearance here.
