| FTBL Bulletin Board Material Absolutely Does Motivate College Teams

There’s a reason Coach Saban restricts his younger players and his assistants from speaking with the media whenever possible. Even when his players and coaches are allowed to talk (like in the run up to bowl games) there’s a unified message directed by Coach Saban. While he and other head coaches publicly discount the effect bulletin board material has on the outcome of games, they all know the opposite can be and often is true. Anyone who’s ever played college football or to a lesser extent high school football knows exactly how it affected them and their teammates when those materials were handled deftly by their coaches.

Apparently, Dabo needs a refresher course on that subject before next season. His ranking OSU 11th and his comments that followed were used to not only motivate the Buckeye players, they also motivated their head coach and his assistants. So much so, I’ve rarely seen a sideline and press box staff as focused and animated as Day and his assistants were last night. Ohio State hasn’t played that well in years. They certainly looked nothing like the team that beat Indiana and Northwestern. Dabo also didn’t do his team any favors by saying all you have to do is look at Lawrence play to know he’s the best QB in the game. Fields obviously took it personally and ended up playing the game of his life. Even the ESPN commentators mentioned that Fields indicated to them his intent to prove he’s the better QB.

Of course, after the game, Dabo claimed his comments had no impact on the game. This coming from one of the masters of using bulletin board material as motivation! The truth is he damn well knows his mouth had a big impact on the outcome but his ego won’t yet let him admit the truth. Oh and for my fellow Tide fans who still love Dabo ... he encouraged Day at the midfield handshake to go win it all. You can bet Saban will use that the next time Bama faces Clemson.

Emotions only go so far. At some point you have to execute on the field which OSU did way better than Clemson last night. Bulletin board material might impact the preparation but why do you need that to prepare the right way for a game?

Honestly I think the bulletin board material is overrated in terms of the real impact on the game. Does not mean I am right just another opinion.

Game will be won in the trenches like it always is. tOSU will be a bigger challenge than Clemson because of their balance on offense. I hope the team that played in the B1G conference game shows up instead of the one that dismantled Clemson but if not give me Bama's A game and they will fine.

Bulletin board material only helps if it makes a team FOCUS. If it just gets them emotional that’s a double edged sword and usually burns out and becomes a non-factor.

Saban praises the other team, no matter who we’re playing.

I prefer college football because of the emotions seen on the field. Professional football is all business with few emotions. Bulletin board material can play a large part in the outcome of a college game, in my opinion. Ohio State was motivated last night with the way they were defeated last year in the CFP semi-finals. Also believe Fields was out to prove he was on the same quality level as the pretty boy from Clemson.

Will unlikely hear talk from Bama but Fields will also want to show he is better than Jones. Also, their WR will want to show he is better than the Heisman winning WR :). These guys are competitors but so is Bama.
