šŸˆ Bo Davis coming back to Alabama as Tide's new defensive line coach

I think so, too. He was a strength coach before he was a field coach, so he knows leverage. His work with players like Dareus, Cody, Deaderick, etc. seems to be a damn sight better than what we've seen in the last couple of years...As far the DL being very disruptive.

Not a knock on anyone, but I keep seeing "more pressure on qb". I want it too, but I don't think it's Rumph's fault we didn't have any for the past few seasons. I just don't think we scheme for it. Our defensive ends would be nose tackles ANYWHERE else. 290lb is a heavy load for a DE. If we are gonna start getting pressure consistently from ends, I think we are going to have to change philosophy a bit and get some quicker, smaller guys. Like, 250-270 range.

DeShawn Hand is on the way.

Only time we're gonna get consistent pressure from the line is when we use the four man front and when that happens the outside ends are linebackers (Hubbard and Devall for example). A'Shawn Robinson can do it consistently imo, he's alot like Marcell Dareus. He can play inside and out and get pressure from either spot.

And that's what I mean. Our defensive line guys eat up blockers. That's our scheme, that's why we have 290lb ends and a 315lb nt. And against a scrambling qb, Saban doesn't like to flush out of the pocket. That's just how we play defense.

It is and on paper trying to make a player like Manziel beat you with his arm and not scrambling around like crazy sounds like a good idea... but when you struggle in the secondary just letting a guy like that sit back and pick you apart doesnt do you many favors. At some point you have to attack with speed.

Ultimately, when a QB can beat you with his arm, the best defense is pass rush. Great corners & safeties help but they will get beat from time to time & will probably give up a big play, especially when left in man (remember, this is against good QB's). Sooooo.... we need a better pash rush.

As far as I can remember, all of 'Bama's loses (except against J Jefferson) since 2008 were against Good QB's. However, all of the losses had some big time plays against our defense. Pass rush defense solves a lot of problems.

according to Coach Saban, you've got to get in the backfield and affect the quarterback and make him throw early or question his decisions. and it's not so much about keeping him in the pocket, it's more like no losing that containment.

Manzeil was good at getting out of the pocket, then getting past the line and using his feet to burn you for a big play. but that's not a normal thing these days (at least not yet). most quarterbacks are still passers and aren't great when they run, so you use the law of averages and go with what you play against the most.

a disruptive line with speed rushers on the ends can wreak havoc on a quarterback and make his life miserable. if he's always on the run then he can't set his feet and he can't make those strong, safe throws that all quarterbacks like, want and need to do. along with that, you have to have the play-makers in the secondary to back you up in case the quarterback does get out of containment and takes off running or is looking to throw the short pass that will net at least some positive yards.

it seems we've lacked that consistency the past couple seasons. we've had it at times, but it hasn't been on a consistent basis. hopefully we can get back to that.
